Mangalore, Jun 2: Mohammed Usman, one of the eight lucky passengers who survived the tragic air crash here on May 22, was discharged from Unity Hospital here on Tuesday June 1. Managing director of the hospital, Dr C P Habib Rehman, bid him adieu, besides wishing him well, in the presence of Dr Mahabalesh Shetty, Dr Ashfaq Mohammed, Dr Sanjay Shahari, Dr Sachchidanand Rai and some relatives of Usman.
Usman, who is from Karkala, has put up his family in the city for educating his children. His children, Rashid Minhas, Saud and Saif, are studying in the city. “None of the other passengers were known to me. When the aircraft crashed and broke into two pieces, I leapt out, started walking away from the site, and later saw two other co-passengers walking behind me. Till I was discharged from the intensive care unit of the hospital, I continued to believe that almost all the passengers had survived the crash,” he explained. He said that he could contact his wife, Shahin Begum, over phone immediately after the crash, by borrowing a mobile phone from some locals whom he met while coming out of the crash site, and that his wife, in turn, contacted a taxi driver known to the family. The driver in question, Koosappa, immediately conveyed information to Unity Hospital, reached the spot and he could reach Unity Hospital at around 6.40 am, he added.
Usman said, he has lost his passport, visa and other documents in the crash, and that the officials of Air India have promised all help in securing necessary documents to enable him to work in Dubai again. He expressed hope that by the time he gets two months rest as per the advice of the doctors, these documents will be ready. Usman, who has been working in Dubai since the last 29 years, had worked earlier for two concerns, before getting employment in DCFC Shipping, Forwarding and Transporting Company Dubai, 19 years ago, where he continues to work even now.
