Mangalore, Jun 2: A mass funeral of 12 unidentified victims of Air India Express plane that crashed at Kenjar near Bajpe Airport on May 22 was held on the banks of Gurupur river at Kuloor on Wednesday June 2.

The bodies were buried will all respects in the presence of the claimants of the unidentified victims. All-faith prayers were performed for the repose of the departed souls by the Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh priests as per request made by the bereaved family members to the district administration.

Minister of state for railways K S Muniyappa and district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar were among the first to offer flowers as tribute the deceased. Ministers Muniyappa and Palemar consoled the families of the deceased and assured to offer help within their capacities. Survivor of the May 22 air crash Pradeep was also present and paid his tribute to the deceased.

Additional deputy commissioner S A Prabhakar Sharma and district police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh paid tribute to the deceased on behalf of the police department. Speaking to Daijiworld, he said that the bodies were not only charred beyond recognition, but the bones, flesh and blood were in a condition that the margin of success of establishing the identification of the bodies through DNA tests was very low. This made it impossible to draw out DNA reports, he informed.

According to Air India sources, the airlines authorities were in deliberation with its legal advisors and insurers to decide on settlement of compensation to the families of the victims whose identification could not be established through DNA test.

Air India staff placed a wreath as a mark of condolence to their colleague air hostess Sujatha Survase followed by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore MLA U T Khadar, Congress leader K K Moiddin Bava, Air India senior manager (corporate communications) V Chandrasekar, district health officer Dr Jagannatha, Home Guards commandant Dr Nidarsh Hegde, district medical officer Dr Saroja, Ahmed M of Indian Association of UAE, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Harsha, president, District Working Journalists’ Association among others.

Blood samples of 34 claimants did not match DNA of any of the 11 victims during the tests done at Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad while one family refused to take the body though the samples matched. The section 34 of the Disaster Management Act empowers the district administration to decide on disposing of the bodies and mostly it is buried.

It is pathetic that our governmetn is claiming they could not establish the identity of the 11 victims. If they cared to check the victims records lying in UAE they they would very well have. I can easily recognize thsi attitude that we find in our public servants: if it doen't concern us, why bother.

We observe from the photographs that the District Administration or any other Authority to that matter has not provided casket/coffin for burial of the mortal remains of the 12 victims of the air crash. It was pathetic to see the remains are being lowerd into the grave draped in cloth and tied with ropes.
Our leaders present at the funeral are required to learn a lot in these matters.

Dear all, in the first place the question of un-identified bodies would not have arisen if the bodies were preserved, proper procedures were followed, DNA-other tests conducted for all 158 bodies etc. before releasing to the rightful owner. A dead body of the loved ones is equally precious for the grieving family members. Readers applying little sense would point fingers at the failure of the Administration who had resorted to shortcuts while addressing "disaster management". I am shocked no body seems to be getting at the bottom/root of the problem. It is absurd to talk about monuments at the cost of somebody elses grief. There are enough of monuments and rotting. For heavens sake STOP PRAYING. Lip service comes free and is of no use if our future generations have to meet this fate. Please wakeup and prevent a repeat of this fiasco. The Administration and Governance are squarely responsible for the aftermath of the crash.

is it not possible to find out who's body not found based on the passenger boarding list plus the number of crews? at least the media can publish the names and details of the passengers name whos body not identified and send to mass funeral.at least we can remember them and we can built a "smaraka" and carve their names in that for their memory.

It was a tragic end alright, but what a lesson for humanity. Whichever religion/faith you belong to, rich or poor, black or white... death is a great leveler. You came from dust and to dust you will go back irrespective. We people have to learn from this.. that while death has got people of all faiths together, why can't we , while alive, live together without hatred and hostility towards people of other faiths??

JAYPEEE, there is a very famous saying it happens only in India ,they have to bury as keeping in morgue costs electricity, where as mangalore is short of power .
you should also understand that there are so many camps ,people come from villages ( like dutco camp, alfuttaim) where no proper communication is not there , these are recruited by agencies and tickets are booked by agencies or mandoops
come on jaypee , all are not genius

The big question in the hearts of those in responsibility/power should be how much have we got to learn and understand from this tragedy? Many serious tragedies have happened and are happening in recent times what impact does it all have on safety and security, planning and prevention of accidents in the future? How many reports/investigations have seen the light of day and have had some outcome on day to day operations/regulation- it is seen to be near zero. Such happenings should provide throughputs for betterment is that happening? if not we are yet to become civilized. Blame game is not at all desireable, its only a political ploy and must be avoided.

Its really very sad state of affairs. We must all remember, "from dust we all came and to dust we will all return". I don't think if is prudent to blame anyone. What is more important is that we pray for each other. God wanted all funerals to take place together because He wanted not to differentiate between each other on basis of religion, caste or creed.

Why is the administration harping about DNA of the 11 persons when actually DNA should have been done for all the 158 victims. There would'nt have been room for any mismatches or controversy. Where were these politicians' concerns (busy giving TV interviews) when the burnt bodies were lying on the floor of the morgue rotting overnight. The aggrieved understandably are too exhausted to think or even consider any actionable claim against the administration for not being able to produce the bodies which were in their custody. What a price to to pay for being an Indian.

I feel truly sorry for the victims and to their fly. There could be two possibilities for this mess. a) Our DNA forensic is pathetic b) The physical body identification process failed miserably.

Govt must come out with an answer.

Very very painful to learn that identities cant be established on 11 mortal remains of the victims. Its really painful and horrible experience for those who could not retrieve the bodies of their relatives. Its all God's will. Let all those who perished in the crash let an elevated place in the gardens of Eden. Lets not fight in the name of religion for we dont know whats in store for us tomorrow. Lets all be united and practice humanity.

Let us pray for eternal peace of all victims who met this tragic end. Pray with almighty to give all kind of strength to the victims family & friends to overcome the saddest duration of their life.
Every individual has their own belief & feelings toward the dead body. Being a relative no one want such kind of final rites for their beloved one. But we must accept, the destiny of one is above all thoughts & modern science. We must solute those who take this unique decision & family member who accepted the same without any other option. We can learn from this incident, every problem has solution if we try with honesty and sincerity.
Dear Daijiworld readers, please take care of yourself, your relatives & friends. Life is very short. Instead of hurting each others, let us love and care for all . God bless all.
