Mangalore, Jun 3: A public protest was held at Valencia circle here on Thursday June 3 as a mark of dissent on the way youth, Conrad Ashok Pashan fell victim to the road accident, allegedly result of poor conditions of the roads in Valencia. Ashok, son of late Pascal Pashan and Theresa Pashan was killed in a road accident that occurred on the roads of Valencia on Wednesday June 2 morning.

Conrad’s family members, Congress leaders, advocate Ivan D’Souza, M G Hegde and Moiddin Bava led the protestors.

Addressing the protestors, D’Souza alleged that inefficiency in delivering duties by the officials of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) resulted in the death of Conrad. The officials have not seen to it that after construction of roads the pits are to be closed and the debris have to be removed, which finally has claimed a life, he said. He demanded officials’ resignation if they failed to get the roads speedily and efficiently completed.

Hegde alleged that MCC officials of not valuing human values. As the officials implement what they wish to while constructing roads without listening to the grievances of the people, this has resulted in lot of deaths off late, he charged.

Bava said that the Tuesday incident, that claimed the life of a person who was supposed to join a job in Dubai on Wednesday, reflected negligence of the MCC officials.

Jecinta Vijay Alfred, corporator, Valencia said that the MCC officials turn a deaf ear to complaints by the citizens.

Speaking to Daijiworld, M Manjunath Shetty, sub-inspector, Bunder police station said that the people around Valencia opposed felling of trees, which has resulted in narrowing of the stretch. He stressed that not all the accidents occur due to negligence of MCC, but also due to the carelessness of the riders.

Johnson Pereira, a local resident explaining about the negligent attitude of MCC said that recently he had complained to the MCC officials with regard to the streetlight near his residence that faces the danger of a fall anytime, but so far no action has been taken.

Ashok’s funerel cortege left his residence Bomeena Cottage, St Joseph Nagar Jeppu for Jeppu Church on Thursday at 4.00 pm.

Please dont blame MCC or any Govt, main reason for this incindent is the last year protest and stay order for not to cut the trees. We all love those trees but every resident of Valancia should understand that the widening roads are more important than those trees. Otherwise we will see these accidents in Valancia frequently. Dear residents of Valancia please allow MCC to do their job without any hurdles.

Traffic accidents were the most common, but Mangalore city has now days highest number of accidents going on.First upon we will find out what is the main reason. There are few common causes of accidents are speeding, carelessness, aggressive driving, drunk driving and distracted dvivers. As a pedestrian you'r never quite sure if a motorist is going to stop. Rackless drivers are overconfident of their abilities to control vehiles at high speeds. while careful drivers will show down in bad driving conditions, these reckless drivers try to make the most by maintaining high speeds. Unfortunately at those speeds even in normal dring conditions one small mistake results in horrific accidents. During the busy period police should be over there on every heavy traffic route to monitor the speed. If the police is there nobody dares to speed or careless driving the vehicle. It is the duty of the traffic police to monitor the speed personally not just through the cameras. This would help for bad driving conditions and accident.

The central or state govt. both are having inapt attitude towards public works. Once the politicians make money and the contractor gets his bill passed then their works are over, whether somebody dies or gets hurt is not thier business. They are busy looking for the next bid for looting. BJP,Congress or JD-S mindset never change.

We all know on which ground the last Corporation Election was won by BJP. How cleverly they capitalized their Trump card (Hindutva) by winning MLA and MP elections. Kudos to the Master minds.
Now let us ponder upon what went wrong in Valencia environment. Mangalore City Planners has opined, planed and were ready to ute Four Lane Concret Road from Kankanady Circle to Morgans Gate Junction. Then came the protest from the locals mainly (christian Laity and few Clergy) by tying Rakhies to the age old senile Trees. This move of few has offended the City Planners as they perceived Unseen Congress Hand in this Protest and they countered it with another protest led by BJP Proteges.
Dear City Fathers if there were Nagana Katte's or Bilva Vriksha's en route of this Kankanady Vaencia Jeppoo stretch would you dared enough to up root it???

We all know what happened at Bunts Hostel Circle, Yeyyadi and what is happening at Bikkarnakatte where the Union Ministry is facing resistance from locals to construct a Fly Over.
Mind you I am not against cutting of any Trees. Cut it for the Development sake but kindly do not show the partiality towards a single community.
Dear City Planners and the executives kindly do not have the grudge against Valencia People. Do your Job sincerely and selflessly. The God almighty will bless you other wise the curse of the effected people will ruin you.

My suggestion, don’t cut trees, stop excessive traffic, reduce extra buses, move the Valencia circle to main road with speed breaker on either side. Don’t allow bus to use road side as garage or parking lot even at night. Don’t allow lories at day time

My suggestion move Valencia circle to little further on main road. Create speed breakers on both sides. Remove unnecessary extra buses. Buses should not drive on inside roads like Valencia to gorrigudda, no heavy vehicle should drive like lorries during day time. No buses should park on road side and do repair work even in night time. All bus owners must park the bus in their own garage. Garage should not be near residential area. Leader who appear on picture please note these points. Don’t cut tree, even you make the road 40feet wide if no discipline you will have same thing. In India one should bring new rules to restrict traffic.

I really wonder with the some statements here. Is it possible to widen the road or complete the work without extending in either side ? Though cutting of trees inevitable, let us suggest to plant new trees wherever place is available on either side or some plain lands around Mangalore. If we expect the riding to be safe, definetly it is better to have a good solution, say, planting trees these Rainy season for the trees which we may have to forgo, or insist MCC for earlier complition of Road, with proper finishing & Markings, etc.

Instead of completing the work, without leaving a gutter in the middle of the road, it looks like the authorities have revenge on their mind. "If you cannot kill the tree Kill the man"seems to be their policy

Raj, cutting trees will not achieve anything buddy, we need to think of reducing unnecessary traffic on the road. There are lots of extra buses on that route. Ban heavy Lories on that road during day time. Bus owners park their bus along side of the road and repair which spills oil on the road which cause slippery as well. Blaming politician, MCC, bund will not achieve anything. They will never help. We are making problem for ourself.

I too had the misfortune of banging my car on this stretch of road against a concrete slab with rods jutting out and with no markings at all. People who blame the trees for these accidents are doing so for political reasons. It is the MCC which should put proper safety markings on the road whenever something has been left unfinished. Another death zone is nanthoor junction where the authorities should do something and regulate the traffic otherwise many lives will be lost here.

This road concretisation seems a mere farce the way it is being dragged on. Not a single area is completed though the process is on going for two yeras and more.
What is the true agenda? Why is such a 'development' on only in our areas of Mangalore? Now the responsible officers are not on the scene too. how long more does this need? Hundreds of people have been injured and many killed! What sort of administration is in place? There are only questions and no answers? No one is responsible. Where is safety and security? Where are morals?

the people around Valencia opposed felling of trees, which has resulted in narrowing of the stretch. Definately I blame the residence of the valencia for this incident. I have seen lot of people own big plots. Also people don't hesitate to cut the trees inside their property if they want to develop or sell it for money. Definately valencia road can be widened with footpaths and new trees.

Sub-Inspector should be ashamed of his statement.May be, not all the accidents happen because of the neglect by the MCC, but some do happen. Has he taken any action to hold MCC responsible for those at least?!

Guys stop blaming each other look around and see what’s wrong around Valencia. Do we need a circle on the edge of the road? Why can’t we remove that circle from there and place on the main road and create humps on both side of the road? Stop protesting think of solution please

Valencia road has taken second life. In January this year, a old man waiting outside the main gate of Fr Muller's hospital was knocked down by a bus due to abandoned work of the road.

MCC blames the trees and where trees are removed they stretch the concrete till the wall leaving pedestrians without a footpath.

Today people staying in valencia are protesting against the ill fatal accident which took place yesterday, infact this was the eight death, nobody raised against previous deaths. Finally people protested thank god. All this happened because of some stupid people who protested last year for not cuting tree next to the road. This trees one day will fall either on road or on the people walking next to it.These people will realize when it falls on them.

The condition of the newly concreted roads in Mangalore is nightmare not only to the pedestrians but also for two wheeler riders. The MCC Officials, if they have least sense of responsibility should immediately address and provide a solution to this problem so as to avoid further deaths. The political leaders who always take credit for the developmental projects should provide a permanent solution for such untimely loss of life.

Basically it is better that public in Valencia co-oparate in widening of road than protesting on felling of trees, & stress the MCC to complete the road at the earliest. Wider road & earlier complition will defintly provide more safe for the riders.

It is heartening to note that at last the civic society and ordinary members of the public have awaken. That stretch of road in Valencia has become very dangerous and the danger is compounded by rash driving by private buses which are in perennial competitive mood unmindful of human lives and limbs. It was encouraging to see also priests and nuns involved in this protest. May this become a movement that lasts.
