Mangaluru, Dec 26: In the general election of gram panchayat's second phase of election on Sunday December 27, Beltangady, Puttur, Kadaba and Sullia taluks will vote to elect their panchayat representatives for 1,500 gram panchayat members from 114 panchayats. In Udupi district, 1,178 gram panchayat members of 86 gram panchayats of Kundapur, Karkala and Kaup taluks will be elected. Forty-one members out of 1,541 in Dakshina Kannada and 65 out of 1,243 members in Udupi district have already been elected unanimously.
A total of 3,128 persons have been deployed on poll duty in Beltangady, Puttur, Kadaba and Sullia taluks. In Udupi district, 1,192 persons in Kundapur, 848 in Karkala and 624 in Kaup have been deployed for poll-related duties.
Mustering at Kundapur Bhandarkar’s college
Mustering centres of Beltangady taluk are located at SDM PU College, Ujire, SDM Degree College, Ujire, Vivekananda College Puttur, Vivekananda Kannada Medium high school, Tenkila, Nehru College, Sullia, and St Joachim's educational Institutions Kadaba. Likewise, in Udupi district, Kundapur Bhandarkars College, Dandatheertha PU College Kaup and government first grade college Karkala have been chosen for mustering and de-mustering centres.
Kundapur
The second phase of gram panchayat elections for 43 gram panchayats in Kundapur taluk will be held on December 27. The mustering for them was held in Kundapur Bhandarkar’s college on Saturday.
The elections had to be held for 554 seats. Candidates for 24 seats are already elected unopposed. Therefore, elections will be held for the remaining 530 seats. 1,262 candidates are in the fray.
1.86 voters
As many as 1,86,685 voters will exercise their franchise. 90,339 among them are male and 96,343 are female voters. Three voters belong to other category.
Forty-three election officers, 43 assistant election officers and 1,064 booth officials for 266 booths at the rate of four officials for each booth are assigned. The overall total number of election officials will be 1,150.
266 booths
There are 271 voting booths. But as unopposed voting has taken place in two booths in Halady, two in Mucchattu and one in Kedoor, there will be no voting in those booths. Therefore, 266 booths including 204 base booths and 62 additional booths are opened. The total booths are identified as 18 Naxal booths, 70 sensitive booths and 178 normal booths.
Strict security
Strict security is taken up in view of the elections. A police officer and a staff are deployed for security in each of the booths. Besides circle police inspectors of Kundapur, Byndoor, Brahmavar and Sen station, 12 sub inspectors, six assistant sub inspectors, 430 police staff members, one KSRP platoon, one district reserve police platoon and three armed reserve platoons are deployed in the leadership of Kundapur DySP in charge Bharath Reddy.
District election observer G T Dinesh Kumar and Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha visited election mustering centre at Kundapur Bhandarkar’s College and conducted inspection. Preparations relating to elections were held in the leadership of Kundapur sub division assistant commissioner K Raju. Tahsildar Anandappa and election officers were present.
