Mangaluru: Heavy on pocket - Price of mutton moves skyward

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 26: From the last few days, the price of mutton has been going up. The rate has seen a jump from the earlier Rs 500 to 600 a kg to over Rs 650 now.

Coastal districts are good mutton markets. Ordinary mutton commands Ra 550 to 600 per kg while Bannur special mutton is sold at Rs 650 to 700 per kg. Zakir, a mutton merchant from Udupi, says that the price has remained stable at this level since a week.

In Mangaluru, mutton price rose from Rs 550 to 600 while the Bannur mutton price rose from Rs 720 a kg to Rs 770.

Sheep for making the mutton come to the coastal districts from Chitradurga, Maharashtra etc. The sheep of Mandya region command higher prices and there is good demand for them. Bannur special mutton is in high demand. The merchants now say the business is slack on account of the fact that the sheep have to arrive from other districts, steep hike in transportation cost, GST, soaring rentals etc. At the same time, chicken continues to retain good demand. Its rate has not gone down during the last three months. In Udupi, live chickens are priced at Rs 130 per kg while the chicken costs Rs 200 per kg. In Mangaluru, chicken with skin is sold at Rs 180 per kg and without skin is priced at Rs 200.

On account of increased demand, the price of eggs has seen a steep hike. Now, loose eggs are sold at Rs 6.50 apiece, and there are indications that it might go up to Rs 7. It is said that the price went up because of higher demand for making cakes.

    Hi Cynthia,

I had a quiet Christmas celebration with my Son & fly. Kuswar and plum cake and lunch sorpotel (not pork but some Mangalrean prepares Beef sorpotel & Mutton green stew with sanna.
I think living for ordinary income earners has become quite hard due to exorbitant cost of meat. Your must have surely prepared or purchase Bhafat /Slorotel and a bottle of wine. I missed the same. No problem, when I visit Mangalore next I will visit Kirem. (keep it a secret some guys feel J........)

Bro, I will never ever agree with your logic. There are incidents that some purely vegetarians occasionally taste (even savor non veg items including prohibited stuff)
If you are a guy from Bendoor you cannot live without Dukra mas/products. I can bet.

Just imagine, what might happen after the beef ban comes into force?
You will get beef for Rs 600 in black market and mutton at Rs 1,500’in the normal market. AND in the bargain many will mint money legally as well as illegally.

When no demand price will fall back.
Its demand and supply law. Let it sky rocket then only the politicians will learn. Surely it may cross Rs. 1,000 by end of year.
In the mean time it will be vegetables and fish cost
I hope pork price will not put common man in distress

it is high time that govt ban slaughtering of all living things including catching fishes( y only cattle. they also feel pain) so that people will b eating vegetables(until they can afford) then comes leaves and then if any one escape from this will return to stone age and barbarism which we are already heading. no value for humans only cows matter, I am not trying to hurt any ones religious sentiments too much belief in ones religion will not make us prosper it only leads us to destruction which ever b the religion.
and i think we r heading towards it

Plants and vegetables too are living things they too feel pain so should not be harmed. Then we are left with earth and inorganic materials to eat. But as per God’s plan we can survive only by eating living things or killed living things. But for BJP its a blind logic.

saquib byndoor, best is no bann on animals used as food for humans.one can choose.Once bann starts ,starts too sentiments here and there, fight ,steal cattle, and sell meat in black. We were happy previously with normal animal selling or slaughtering.with law begann .Are these animals not meant for humans consume?wild animals too consume meat.so should we tell them too dont eat meat but eat gras?one should be realistic .Not start to make laws even for your daily consume like in communistic landSo much freedom one should have. One who ca nt afford to buy Mutton can eat fish or chicken.or veg.
