Kundapur, Jun 4: Senior geologist in the department of mines and geology in Udupi district, M Mrityunjaya, has clarified that the earthquake experienced in the taluk and some places of Udupi district on Thursday June 3 was of very low intensity. The fact that the tremors were not recorded in the seismometers set up at Linganamakki and Gorur in the state indicates that the intensity of the tremors was less than 1.5 on Richter scale, he analyzed.
The tremors, experienced at different times at different places within about an hour’s duration, had forced the people to rush out of their homes and offices. Parked motor bikes fell to the ground, and utensils placed on the tables fell down at some places. Some said that they felt as if a huge boulder was rolling along in some cavity inside the earth. No damage to lives or property was reported on Thursday. However, the people living or working in old structures and sending children to schools functioning in dilapidated buildings are worried about the possibility of more such tremors visiting the district and inflicting damages. The fact that the places where the tremors were expeirnced are located within a few kilometres from the seashore, have made them more apprehensive.
