Mangaluru, Dec 27: In memory of the late Lawrence and Mary Mathias, Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha distributed bicycles, medical aid, sewing machines and clothes to senior citizens. The programme was held in the auditorium of Ashoknagar Higher Primary School on Sunday, December 27.

Joseph Mathias, NRI entrepreneur and managing director of Merit Freight Systems, Henry Mendonca, well-known Konkani writer and publisher were the chief guests of the event. Shankar N Poonja, president, Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha presided over the programme.

Distributing the aid to senior citizens, Joseph Mathias said, "Normally every year on Independence Day we plan this event. But this year due to restrictions enforced amid the pandemic we were forced to postpone it to December. My parents have always taught me to be kind towards the unprivileged. I can say with certainty that this is the best thing that I have learnt from my parents. These elderly people remind me of my parents. I thank the president and members of Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha for hosting this programme. Every year the organisation conducts such charity programmes in the name of my parents and extends a helping hand to those who are in need. As a team, Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha is doing a wonderful job by performing selfless service to society.”

Speaking at the event, Henry Mendonca said, "Being a successful businessman, Joseph Mathias is known for his philanthropic activities. He never turns down anyone who approaches him seeking financial help. Being a singer himself, he is a patron of art and the artists. I had also attended his aid distribution programme the year before. Despite the corona pandemic and other challenges, with the help of Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha, this year too he has continued with his mission to help the destitute. This shows how much he is committed towards the society and community. He has never tried to gain publicity for doing social service nor expected anything in return from the society. I appreciate the love he has for his parents and the way he honours them by these kinds of charitable activities."

In the event, on behalf of Ashoknagar Yuvaka Sangha, the guests also felicitated the president of Jai Bharathi Taruna Vrinda, Urwa-Hoigebail for winning the district Rajyotsava award.

B Nagesh Karkera, honorary president, B Hariprasad, president, Billava Sangha, Ashoknagar, were present on the dais.
