Rajya Sabha Polls : Vijaya Mallya Independent Candidate ?
Bangalore, June 7 (DHNS) : With the last date to file nominations to the Rajya Sabha polls just 24 hours away, the suspense on who would contest the fourth seat from the State continued through the day on Sunday paving way for speculation among political circles.
The JD(S) has convened its legislature party meeting on Monday morning to decide on the party's voting pattern for the Rajya Sabha polls.
While JD(S) does not have sufficient number of votes to send its candidate to the Rajya Sabha on its own, the party’s support is crucial for the fourth seat.
First preference votes
Members of the Legislative Assembly form the electoral college in the biennial polls to the Rajya Sabha and as many as 45 first preference votes are required to elect each candidate.
BJP, with a strength of 116 MLAs, has already selected two candidates - former national party president Venkaiah Naidu and former MP Ayanur Manjunath.
The Congress can send one candidate to the Rajya Sabha and has decided to renominate Oscar Fernandes.
Mallya as independent?
All the three candidates have already filed their nomination papers. It’s the fourth seat that has caused all the hype. The support of two parties is essential for a candidate for the seat. Speculation continued on Sunday that liquor baron Vijay Mallya may file his nomination as an independent candidate on Monday.
However, contradictory statements emerged from the Congress camp on Sunday on fielding the second candidate. Speaking at the sidelines of a function, Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly S Siddaramaiah said the Congress was thinking of fielding its second candidate, while Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily told reporters in Kasargod that the party will support only an independent candidate.
Violation
JD(S) Spokesperson Y S V Datta on Sunday took exception to the chief minister’s plan to inaugurate an e-stamping centre in Belgaum next week.
Datta said it would violate the model code of conduct in force for Legislative Council polls from the graduates and teachers constituencies.
An official complaint will be filed with the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer on Monday.
