Mangalore: City Administration Set to Tackle Monsoon Exigencies—MCC Commissioner

Mangalore, Jun 8: K N Vijayaprakash, commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), speaking to Daijiworld, said that they were prepared to protect citizens of Mangalore from natural calamities during the rainy season.
“Due to the concrete roads, which are at a higher level, the water may flow towards the houses nearby”, he said.
Vijayaprakash added that they are in the process of constructing drains wherever necessary as this will help stop flooding during the monsoon, especially in areas like Kottara where people suffer a lot during the season.
There is a special squad of the MCC to help people in distress 24/7 and the helpline numbers are 2220358, 2220306. The control room number is 2220344 and Integrated Voice Recording System (IVRS) numbers are 344 and 306 which will begin working in two days.
Areas which may flood in Mangalore have been recognized and precautionary steps have been taken with the help of the fire department, home guards, and department of fisheries.
The health department is also ready position to help prevent Mangalore from spread of water borne diseases. JCB’s and tippers are also ready 24/7 to help if any landslides occur.
Street lighting
Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash said that MCC is paying a grand total of Rs 17 crore towards electricity supply and innovative measures have been taken up to cut cost in this direction.
“MCC has had talks with a Bangalore based company to install a new technology wherein the street lights will be automated. The project will be taken up on pilot basis from PVS Circle to Lady Hill.”
Roads
Speaking about the concrete road works, Dr Vijayprakash said that of the Rs 100 crore funds from the State government, a total of Rs 65 crore has been sanctioned earlier and a Rs 6 crore was sanctioned later, thereby making a sum of Rs 71 crore sanctioned to City Corporation. “Utilising this funds, a total of 17 concrete road works have been taken up of which 13 roads have been completed. A total of Rs 64.27 crore has been spent in this regard,” he said.
He informed that an Action Plan will be prepared for second phase of the Rs 100 crore fund, under which development of remaining important roads at a cost of Rs 25 crore, Rs 2 crore for traffic management and Rs 1 crore will allocated for renovation of Town Hall.
He further informed that a total of Rs 24 crore tax has been collected through Self Assessment Scheme as of now.
