Arvind Kejriwal-led government approves to set up Konkani academy in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS): The Delhi government on Friday approved the setting up of a Konkani academy here to facilitate the growth and promotion of Konkani language and culture in the national capital -- a step intended to strengthen Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) foothold in Goa ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.

The academy will be set up under the Department of Art, Culture and Languages of the Delhi government for the people of the national capital to have exposure to the rich Konkani culture, language, literature and folk arts. The academy will soon be allocated an office space with all the necessary infrastructure.

After storming to power in a comprehensive fashion in Delhi and making its presence felt in Punjab, AAP now wants to establish its foothold in other states.

The AAP has started its preparations afresh in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Goa. According to the party, it would be contesting the next Assembly elections in four states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa.

As Konkani is the official language of Goa, political experts and opposition parties have raised doubts that it is AAP's strategy to attract voters Goa which is scheduled to go to the polls in 2022.

"Goa has a special place in every Indian's heart. Delhi government's Konkani academy will bring forth the best of authentic Konkani culture to the capital," said Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

In 2019, the Delhi government constituted 14 new language academies under the Department of Art, Culture and Languages. The purpose of a language academy is not only to cater to the speakers of that language, but also to reach out to a wider audience.

Mentioning that Konkani is a dynamic part of India's cultural history, Sisodia said that while several languages were included in the first phase, there are some important languages that need to be included in the next phase.

Recently, the minister said, a Tamil academy was also notified and set up by the Delhi government to promote Tamil culture and language.

The Department of Art, Culture and Languages has decided that the new academy will introduce various awards to promote and reward the good works done by the people in the fields of Konkani language and culture.

The government will also provide language courses through this academy.

Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people, primarily along the western coastal region (Konkan) of India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.

Premier Konkani cultural organisation Mandd Sobhann also expressed extreme joy at the Delhi government's decision to approve the setting up of a Konkani academy in Delhi.

The gurkar, president, office bearers, committee members and members of Mandd Sobhann extend their gratitude to the chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP government for taking this step and congratulates Konkani Association Delhi, for this wonderful achievement.

Kejriwal is the only non-corrupt politician in India, of course, including members of his party AAP. We Konkani speaking people must thank him for this initiative.

I just want to tell the readers that this man Arvind Kejriwal is a wonderful politician and leader. I met a Quite a few people from Delhi in Bangalore and asked them what they have to say about the Delhi Government AAP . They simply said, he needs time to change and he is slowly doing it step by step.Specially the public health care system and Government schools. They said neither parties have done what he has been doing now.I only feel India needs leaders like him if you want India to change.

Moira, tell me about it. This breed does not mind talking in broken English but they will distance from their mother tongue. You speak to them in Konkani and you get a response in broken English. We call it ’Botler English’.

Konkani is my mother tongue and I love to interact in Konkani. I have observed since childhood among my my own catholic relatives a kind of a stigma towards Konkani. They refuse to converse in Konkani and look down upon the language. As a child I was confused by this strange behaviour but now I say it’s hypocrisy. These so called high strata feel they are doing a favour by speaking in English. Why go far I used to get strange looks when I spoke in Konkani
I wonder what the hypocrites have to say for this .

You are not alone to feel that way. I have experienced this myself and those people think I do not know English and that I do not have much education. When I try to talk in Konkani, my mother tongue, I get response in English!!! [from far less educated people, including a few relatives, even those living in Mangalore]. After 50 years in English-speaking countries, I still speak Konkani whenever there is an opportunity.

That ‘I don’t know Konkani breed’ unfortunately does not realise that they are leading a life of pretence for years altogether.
It is easy to lead a simple life. But you have to put efforts to pretend to be something else , which can have bearing on health
It’s disgusting to associate with such a lot

Real born mangaloreans do not do it. This breed is either imported from some village or whose parents slogged in the gulf or Mumbai doing petty jobs to give educate their children. Also they feel ashamed of their native place.
