Mangaluru, Jan 9: At around 7 pm on Friday January 8, a springs manufacturing unit at Baikampady industrial area caught fire due to an electric short circuit. Reportedly, the accident happened in the robot unit of the concern.

Immediately after fire was sighted, local Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers and Kadri fire brigade vehicles reached the spot and got busy with a long-drawn effort to extinguish the fire. With difficulty, the fire was put off.

It is said that the unit has a stock of about 90,000 litres of furnace oil but luckily fire did not spread to this stock. When the accident occurred, night duty workers were working. Some of them had left to have tea on account of recess. Therefore, no lives were lost.

Senior officials of the company visited the spot. Panambur police sub-inspector Umesh, supervised the security aspect under the direction of Panambur zone assistant commissioner of police, Belliappa.

This happens to be the only ultra-modern springs manufacturing unit in the district that is functioning by adopting the latest technology.
