Chikkamagaluru, Jan 9: After the controversial cow slaughter ban law was enforced in Karnataka through an ordinance, the first case under the law was registered in the district on Friday January 8.

Thirty-four cattle were being illegally transported in two containers to Mangaluru from Ranebennur in Davanagere district via Sringeri during the early hours on Friday when a group of youngsters stopped them near Tanikodu check post. The driver of one of the vehicles ran away from there while the other driver was attacked by the mob. The police who came to the spot later, took over both the containers and the animals. Separate cases were registered in Sringeri police station against the two drivers.

The injured driver, identified as Abid Ali from Davanagere, stands admitted into the government hospital at Sringeri for treatment.

This happens to be the first case in the state to have been registered under the new law. The law has placed restrictions on transportation of cows for slaughter. If the charges are proved, the accused can be sentenced to between three and seven years of jail terms with fine of up to five lac rupees.
