Dammam: Young Girl Dies After Hours in Scorching School Bus

Dammam: Young Girl Dies After Hours in Scorching School Bus
News by P A Hameed Padubidri
Daijiworld Media Network—Dammam (CN)

Dammam, Jun 13: Fidah Mohammed Haris, 5, a student of Dammam International Indian School, died in her school bus due to asphyxiation on Sunday June 13.

In May this year, a kindergarten pupil had died in a similar incident in Doha, Qatar. Fidah’s death is the fourth such in the GCC region in less than three years.

Fidah, daughter of Mohammad Haris, dressed in her school uniform, boarded her school bus cheerfully on Sunday morning. When the bus reached the school, all the students got off except her.

Since it was early morning on a hot day, Fidah had dozed off in the last seat and went unnoticed. As is his practice, the driver, closed the windows and doors of the bus without a second look inside and parked the vehicle in front of the school in.

The bus was parked in the scorching heat with not even the slightest bit of shade. When the driver returned at noon to take the children back home, he found the girl dead inside. The tearful teachers and students rushed to the van and then to hospital. The institution was engulfed in shock and sorrow as news of the death spread.

The body is in Astoon Hospital on the Dammam-Khobar highway, awaiting the completion of legal formalities. Ibrahim Kalkar Dammam and Anwar Sadath Suralpady, Jubail, conveyed this news to Daijiworld from the hospital.

Sources informed that Fidah will be buried in Dammam cemetery once the formalities are completed.

Fidah hails from Perunthalmanna of Malappuram district in Kerala. Her father works at a restaurant in Dammam.  She was studying in UKG in the school. The school management and teachers have expressed their grief on the sad demise of the student.

It is common in the Kingdom to see students on school buses and other private vans. The parents entrust the care and safety of their wards to the drivers. It is the duty of the drivers to exercise care and caution when ferrying the children.

Since it is peak summer, they must ensure that the seats are not tightly packed and the air conditioning is working properly. They need to check the vehicles to ensure that all the children have alighted safely. Above all, it is the school management’s responsibility to issue strict guidelines to their drivers and see that these are complied with.

WE ARE REALLY FOOLS IN THIS WORLD BECAUSE WHEN SUCH INCIDENTS TAKE PLACE WE KEEP THAT ISSUE AT ONE END AND START GIVING COMMENTS TO SHOW OUR NAME IN THE WEBSITE. AS PER MY THINKING IT WOULD BE VERY GOOD AND HELPFUL TO ALL PARENTS WHOSE CHILDREN ARE TRANSPORTED BY SCHOOL BUSES TO PUT UP THIS ISSUE TO THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND REQUEST THE SCHOOL AUTHORITIES TO ARRANGE A MAID IN ALL SCHOOL BUSES WHICH TRANSPORT CHILDREN FROM LKG TO AT LEAST 2ND OR 3RD STANDARD. LET US STOP USELESS COMMENTS AND TAKE A USEFUL STEP.

My heartfelt condolences to Fidah's parents and family. May this little angel's soul rest in peace and Almighty God give the strength and courage to Fidah's parents to over come the great loss they are facing. Once the parents board their kid to school transport, they never know what is happening in school, in fact parents are not aware also that the kid is safely reached to the school and in the class room, until the kid comes back home. School management should take extra care on these matters. It should be compulsory to inform the absence of child from parent and if there is no call from parents, school or teacher should take the initiative to check whether the child has boarded the bus or not. It is really a tragic incident and it should not happen anywhere in the world.

May God give patience to the parents of Fida during this sorrow moments. 1. The following preventive measures must be taken by school management.
    2. Each school bus must keep assistant apart from Driver, particularly for UKG to 5th Class.
    3. A ‘child-handover from’ should be maintained, duly signed by teacher/parent every day while receiving child. Driver or bus-assistant must give this responsibility.
    4. If any kid is absent, Teacher should call driver / bus-assistant whether picked or not.
    5. Parents must inform Class teacher if the kid is absent.
    6. School management should arrange shade Parking shelter for all transportation vehicles.
    7. Parents must not seek for cheap private transportation for their children.

Very sad news. The ideal solution is:If any ward is absent, class teacher can inform the school public relation officer. He check with the parents if the child left home or not.Any such incidents could be avoided in this manner.Parents are unaware of any situation of their child until he/she comes back home after 6/7 hours. The blame should go primarily to school management, secondly the transporter.

What happened is very hurting I have been driving my kids to school for the past 9yrs and have ended up fighting with so many parents and private drivers because of their selfish ways.In this 9yrs I have neither obstructed nor blocked traffic I have always parked my car in a proper place walked my kids to school no matter how far or hot or late it was, HOW MANY DO THAT? the parents/drivers have no regard for the zebra crossing nor parking sense. All starts from the road where the parents and private vans zooming in all directions/sneaking into tracks their main goal to their kids on time others go to hell.I have stopped private vans and parents alike and scolded them for their rash driving.Van windows without grills/bars.No A/c in van.Overloaded vans, some vehicles the kids are sitting in front seat of the van without seat belts and the driver is half out on the window driving.I have seen so many van drivers ping off the kids far away from the school main gate and some kids have to walk to different villas on their own with heavy bags.Do the parents anytime checked these things.Maybe few but not many.It should be every parents responsibilities to ensure that the kid reaches school in a safe manner. And if it is school trans then also it is the parents responsibility to check if the things are done properly if it is not they have to address then and there don’t wait for a incident to react. What is required is action not reaction.

Indeed a very sad and disturbing news. Without any partiality all concerned like the parents, bus driver and the school authorities should be held responsible and punished for this incident. Probably, the parents might have sent the kid to school forcefully as she was not well or a dose of medicine was administered to her. This might have caused the child to douse and apparently she could not make out the extraordinary heat. Let the Govt. authorities make a thorough investigation and medical reports can only reveal the truth. Heartfelt sympathies to parents.

1.there should be IISD parents forum has to be formed to raise the problems they are facing and to find solution
2.All private van drivers to get permission from school authority , school authorities should check if the van has basic fecilities like A/C and good running condition or not
3.All authorised vehicles should have stickers on the van and should have ID [ provided by School authorities]
4.Parents should check the stickers and ID before the agree with the private van
5.All vehicles should have a condector along with drivers, to take care of the wards ,All the van should be checked to make sure none are left behind

This is a second incident in as many months where a child had to die because of the negligence of an irresponsible driver. Daijiworld reports that the bus carrying the children was a school-bus. There were few such cases in the past, however the school-bus operators have not learned in the past, nor would they learn in the future too.
It is quite common for the children to fall asleep when they travel a few minutes in a vehicle as they are woken up from their deep sleep in the morning and sent to school. In response to Qatar incident, I had reported how a child in Saudi Arabia survived in a scorching bus that was left in the morning till afternoon, unattended.
When the responsible driver should be held responsible and given a befitting punishment for his irresponsible and negligence act, the school authority too should equally be held responsible. When a child is absent, it should contact the partents to know the reason for the child's absent. It is only a few children become absent, as such it should not be a big task to school authorities to contact the parents.
I am in Canada where my two children are studying, one in primary school another in junior college. If our children don't go to school, we have to inform their schools before the school starts. If they don't receive our call, we receive call from the school to check if they are home.

whats disturbing in the comments below, is people forget the main issue, and get into argument " i am better than you". this ego is not going to help here. so please be more concern about the issue, rather than on your "so called ego centric approach".

simple and straight path is " driver must check the bus before getting down".

WHY A DRIVER OF PARTICULAR BUS/VAN IS NOT ABLE TO SPEND FEW MINUTES TO SEE WHTHER ALL CHILDERNS GET DOWN FROM THE PARTICULAR VAN/BUS.

THIS IS 100% FAULT OF A DRIVER & ALL CHILDRENS ARE INNOCENT & ALL ARE LIKE A GOD.

First of all let the All Mighty give peace to the sad parent of Fida.. The school management have to make proper measures to avoid these thing in future.
Besides let me bring your attention on something.
Because of the new timings in KG, the management is insisting to collect the children before 12.30 pm. They are not allowing to keep the child inside class after this time. Many children have their elder brothers or sisters studying in the same school. Even though the school management is not allowing to keep until he/her comes and collect the child. Because of these restrictions i could see some van drivers are forced to collect the small children and keep them in Van until 1.30 pm for the elder students go on same trip. How these kids can afford these.

I had personal experience, My child is studying in Kindergarten. And her brother is studying on the same building -i can say just above her class. But because of the new restriction i am forced to arrange different transportation. Remember, here I have to arrange two drivers even though they are coming to same home. Added to these difficulties now I have to arrange a babysitting also as nobody is at home to collect the child on the new time. When I noticed these difficulties to be the principal and headmistress , they said they cannot do anything and this is the rule must follow. They were not even ready to understand the difficulties of a parent .

To avoid such incidents in future, teachers of class LKG, UKG, 1 to 10 std, teachers should call the parent of the absent student, inform them the about their kids absent to class and ask what is the reason for the absent. This procedure will take the teacher hardly 5 to 10 mins. Coz each class not more than 5 student will absent every day.

Dear Readers, Yes it's very sad that a child has lost her life because of negligence from the Driver. After reading some of the comments/remarks I would like to clarify certain points here.
The child did not travel by School Bus, it is a private van arranged by the parents (not clearly stated in the above report). The school has more than 15,000 students. The school has differnt locatios like boys, girls, KG section... Just blaming the school authorities for an incident which is beyond their control is also not correct. I am not trying to defend anyone but all have to see that such incidents don't repeat.

This is really bad news, we will be blaming this and that, which will not solve the problem. We should see what preventive measures should be taken in the future so that such incidents may not happen. First and foremost a attendent is a must and necessary in the bus. It might solve half the problem other measures like log, parents informing the absence, school authorites calling to find out the sbsence, head count etc etc.I still wonder why could the driver not see the child when closing the window's, unless the hind window's were already closed or he should have closed them from outside. Steve may be a degree in agricultural science may help to improve the yeild of the crops. Education will make a person wiser, to reason, guess, calculate and understand the circumstances.

I fail to understand what you mean by all this. Why are you allowing your children to sing and dance in the name of education, if you know they are fools? Is this a case of "One fool recognizes the other fool?"

Another victim of middle east/Gulf school Managament and their careless staff .. Really shocking and heart breaking one I think such thing will continue to happen if parents / parents teachers association takes a strict action / preventive measurement against such incident even private bus drivers should given awareness / training so that thier careless , rude behaviour can be stopped for ever but what we see is school ( most of them are housing apartments or villas converted into schools) management focusing only on their income ..   children's saftety ,security and their welfare are totally ignored for all parents ,This is the right time to think and act against this type of incidents..

Undoubtedly it is the gross negligence and carelessness on the part of the school authorities. it is there duty to make the driver responsible for any happening of this nature. The driver should be instructed to physically go upto the last row of the bus and check whether any kid for some reasons failed to disembark. Further he should start the bus for parking only after ensuring that all children have got down safely. After the Doha incident, as someone has rightly said, all other schools should have taken sufficient care. They make more money than what is required from the transportation and that's their worry. Dismiss the principal outright and send the driver to jail.

Very shocking news. Due to the carelessness of some people, one innocent life is lost. All School should have rules not to Operate a school bus without an attendant. Even if it is a bus operated on contract, the school should ensure that an attendant accompanies the children on board

What's going on in middle-east?? Innocent children loosing their lives. Look at the school authorities no guidelines set to school bus drivers in spite of recent incident in Doha. All these schools and drivers should be held responsible and punished either by cancelling their school permits/license and booking drivers with conspiracy to murder/death. Hope at least now on all schools in gulf issue fresh guidelines to all school bus drivers and have periodical random checks done on the condition of school bus. Once child has boarded the bus its drivers responsibility for the safety of child.

This negligence goes beyond any toleration. Drivers/supervisors have names and numbers of students. When we are dealing with such small kids if the buses are not checked it's quite a serious affair and such a tragic loss of life

    PEOPLE NEVER LEARN!!!

THE SO CALLED LEARNED MEN/WOMEN/MANAGEMENT RUNNING SHCOOLS IN MIDDLE EAST NEVER LEARN!!!! THESE IDIOTS SHOULD BE KICKED OUT WITH HUMILIATION!! THEY ONLY THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING OUR CHILDREN DUE TO THEIR SHEAR NEGLIGENCE AND HOLLOW SELF CONFIDENCE.

WAS THERE NOTHING TO LEARN FROM DOHA INCIDENT????????
CAN'T THE MONEY SUCKERS MANGEMENT OF EVERY SCHOOL TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN THEIR OWN SCHOOLS MAKING SURE THESE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENTS DON'T HAPPEN IN THEIR SCHOOLS??

THEY (management)THINK ONLY THESE DEATH INCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN IN OTHER SCHOOLS NOT THEIRS!!!

IGNORANT FOOLS ONLY KNOW HOW TO EAT POOR PEOPLES MONEY AND MAKE OUR CHILDREN SING AND DANCE IN THE NAME OF EDUCATION.

THESE IGNORANT FOOLS ARE SAME LIKE THE OLD PEOPLE OF MOSES AND JESUS WHO ALWAYS SAY NOTHING CAN HARM US.

My sincere condolences to the bereaved family who I think should take the management of the school to the court for killing their beautiful daughter.

Very sad news. In fact I have seen many pvt vans carrying these children will not have proper a/c in this croaching heat. Eventhough it is illegal to transport children in pvt vans but if the drivers take proper care noone would have objections. But anyone can see near the schools many vans without proper a/c Its very sad that parents not even school management not taking any actions aganist these transporters. If daiji allows, we will sned the pictures of the same to take some action.

ANOTHER INNOCENT GIRL( MUGDHA BALAKI) DIED BECOZ OF NEGLIGENCE BY DRIVER & SCHOOL AUTHORITY.

EYE FOR EYE RULE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED. DRIVER SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DIE IN THE SAME MANNER.

WHY THERE IS NO PROTEST FOR KILLING OF INNOCENTS.

THIS IS DISGISTING. DRIVER IS THE CULPRIT & THEN SCHOOL AUTHORITIES.

WHY LOT OF COMMENTS AGAINST PARENTS. PLEASE DO NOT BLAME PARENTS IN SUCH INCIDENTS. THIS IS 100% NEGLIGENCE & CULPRIT SHOULD BE PUNISHED.

Now days this becomes common in many places (especially Middle East). This happens mainly due to no enough sleep at home for children. Responsible people for this are mainly parents not allowing children to sleep on time and spending their time in watching TV (silly TV serials and bolly wood movies). Secondly irresponsible low paid transport service people taking innocent children’s life.

Can't even think about it. A small mistake paid high price. My heart felt condolences to the parents of Fida. It seems IIS Dammam administration never learned from the past experiences. They must implement the measures for the future safety of the students. Class teachers has to be interacted the parents whenever the ward found absent on that particular day. Driver must deserve punishment.

The parents should inform the respective class teacher when their child is on leave. Each day when the register is checked the teacher should see that when a child is absent the parent has informed them the child is at home. Immediate action should be taken if the teacher notices a child is not in class and the parent has not informed them of absence. This way a check can be done and also any unfortunate incidents can be prevented.
I would say its even better if parents take responsibility to their children till they reach grade 1 as the kids are too small. Traffic and office work can be a hindrance in which case the parents of each locality can take turns to the kids, much safer than depending on rash and unconcerned drivers.

Sad News. Not only in Saudi, this happens in UAE & all Middle east countries. Every time it is covered up unless accident happens.
We cannot put complete blame on drivers ( some time they are from rent a car)or teachers ( they are not allowed to give their cell number to parents directly). As mentioned by some readers log book must be maintained & it must be signed by both driver, attendent & the teachers in morning & noon time. Let management of all schools in middle east take proper precautionery step.

Very sad news within a short span (Similar incident at Doha). While looking at the scenarios and considering the safety of the kids, worldwide authorities should think of installing electronic counter at the entrance of the bus with an alarm if in & out numbers are not matching. In the electronic world it is the simplest & peanut value device (Infra red device or similar to this)

The school should have made rule that once the kids come out of the school van the drivers are supposed to check the bus and then put a board saying 'checked'. After that only they should park. Small kids tend to sleep off in the school bus. Same incident took place in Abudhabi last year.

Most of the drivers here are irresponsible and under( below 5th std) educated. School managaement had to blame because they appoint these drivers and not at all bother to give them any health and safety training instructions regularly. why cannot they keep one log book in the bus and signed by a teacher daily.

Sad to hear this kind of incident again.I still wonder why the school administrative council follow up student attendence every morning and call up parents to find out if the student is at home or left to school every morning as soon as possible once the class teacher resposible for first hour of the morning session.

This could have helped to save childs life and in future all schools should have an assembly point to record students arrival and inform parents if students dont show up.

We do have a system here in Dubai and in north america ,europe etc to call up parents or home numbers on school record. However ,this is also responsibility of parents too, to check up with school authority or transport provider every day.

School management also equally responsible for negligence on safety of children. School should take special care to LKG/UKG students. My suggestion is that school should have a mobile security van to go around the school from morning to till last student leave the school premises.
