Mangalore June 15: International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA), Bangalore, organized a felicitation programme for the winning Christian candidates of the recent gram panchayat (GP) elections. The programme was organized at Milagres Hall here, on Monday June 14.

Bishop of Mangalore, Dr Aloyusius Paul D’Souza, was the chief guest the programme. In his inaugural address, the Bishop said he was happy that a number of Christian community members had participated in the Gram Panchayath elections. Congratulating the winning candidates, the Bishop advised them that as leaders and representatives of the society, they have a duty towards the people to fulfill the promises they had given to the people, and to remain honest in discharging their duties. The leaders should make it a point to help people from all the religions without any discrimination, so that the people will repose trust in them and elect them again in the next election, he advised.

J R Lobo, executive director, Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, who participated as the guest of honour, said that the participation of the community in politics is very important. “We see people losing the elections just by a margin of single digits. In such cases, the defeated candidates have every reason to nurture hopes for success in the next election. If we have to fulfill Gandhiji s dream or Ramarajya, we have to start working from the gram panchayat level  itself. Former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, contributed enormously towards strengthening the gram panchayats. Being members of a cultured section of the society, we should know how to shoulder the responsibilities and fulfill the needs of the people,” he felt.

Ronold Colaco, chairman of IFKCA, speaking on the occasion, expressed concern at the fact that the Christians are not being represented properly in politics, and that only 0.1 percent of their population is active in politics. He noted that the missionaries imparted education to all the sections of the Indian community, helping the people of different religions to prosper. He wondered why the Christians are lagging behind in politics, reminding them that renowned Kannada poet, Kuvempu, had once said, ‘Gurukulas never made me a great poet, as that system of education was reserved only to some castes,  and Christian missionaries  really helped me to rise to such a great height’. “When we can create opportunities for others to grow, why cant we grow in all the fields, especially politics?” he questioned.

Valentine D’Souza, deputy superintendent of police,  Panambur, who won the gold medal from the Chief Minister for his bravery, was also felicitated on this occasion with others at the programme.

Hannibal Cabral, principal, Karnataka Theological College in the city, IFKCA chairman, Ronald Colaco, Dennis D’Silva, convener of IFKCA, president of Catholic Sabha Mangalore (R), Walter Cyril Pinto, and president of Catholic Women’s wing of the local diocese,  Leena Roche, were present.

Stany Alvaris proposed vote of thanks.

    AS Mathew,
Your words are more leading towards fanatism than sudarshans concern that perhaps many of them will have if they are not serious about religion. Sory to say this but each individual has their rights to judge and comment, you cant question him as it is his perception and urs is diffrent which you have the right to say.

    The Christian community from
day one (2000 years back) was
    under persecution, but through
    severe persecution, Christianity
has grown by surprsing the persecutors.

    The Christians of Russia never
saw the danger of communism, so
took a pacifist attitude, and paid
    a heavy price. The Christian
    Church in Germany didn't pay
attention to the danger of Nazism,
and paid a very heavy price.

The Christian are paying the taxes
like everybody else, and if we
    keep aloof from active political
involvement, then we are deliberately yielding our freedom
    beneath somebody and bringing
    prsecution on ourselves.

If the Goverment of Karnataka (in the ministry level)
had strong Christian presence, the anti-social elements
of the society won't dare to attack
the Churches without any fear of
    impunity.

    Father James Keller, founder
    of "Christopher Movement" has
    emphasized that the Christian
    community must be involved with
    politics to change the society.

Whenever ultra religious fundamentalism takes hold on us,
we will be turned slothful in the
    daily issues of the society,
and somebody else will take control
of the society, at that point we
    lost our freedom.

    The Christian community, though a
    minority in India, has greatly
    contributed for the nation in
education, health and social services. We can do more in the
same direction, as a we establish
    more political influence in the
    Indian politics. So, get involved
in politics with a burning passion

There are many associations in our Christian community. But none like Mr.Ronald Colaco. So far, no one has been able to replicate the good deeds which Mr.Colaco and his association has done. He encouraged all the Christian Politicians to come together. He gave full support/backing (Financially and morally) to the contestants in the recently conducted grama Panchayath elections. In South Canara, about 400 out of 900 Christian candidates won the election. The credit goes to Mr.Colaco and his associates.

Through his support, our community brethren could contest the elections.

I sincerely request Mr.Colaco to continue his good work in bringing unity. Wish you all the best & success in your future.

Is Christians are biased? not at all. When people are elected to the public bodies they should not be biased towards any community and I believe it is common sense and culture of Great Indian unity in divesrsity.Having said that,I also presume Bishop also advocated in good heart. It is really a community fecilitation for the elected members of the community.

People looking through colored glasses, stop it.I learnt and studied in Christian and Hindu institutions but I know for sure Christians don't discriminate on religion/ caste. If Christianity wanted to do so it would have been very easy when British ruled India. What we see now, the VHP/RSS
are nothing but opportunist in the name of Hinduism, who want to cash on the poor and ignorant people.

i really appreciate the efforts of ronald coalco in strengthening our community. sad thing is that our bishop seems to be least interested in these efforts. he has to learn administrative skills. he must take practical lessons from bishop bernard moras. our bishop seems taking pleasure only in various building inaugurations and receiving garlands. we should have had either bernard or bishop jerry as our shepherd.

This is a very good start at last in the field of socio- political life of the Catholic community. This needs to be further strengthened by the bishop encouraging to establishing a Catholic Sabha Shaka in every parish. So far bishops and priests have shunned politics and those involved in politics because canon law prohibits them from involving in active politics. So they threw the baby out with the bath water. Many parish priests have an aversion for having a Catholic Sabha Shaka in the parish because they don’t know how distinguish and share power. Parishioners through the parish council must demand this. Let be movement from grass roots and let every one be involved.

Dear Mr. Sudarshan, it is not Religion in Politics. It is only a gathering to advise & encourage elected candidates to discharge their duties with honesty & to serve 'ALL' communities equally. Please read the message of our beloved Bishop to the elected candidates carefully - "the Bishop advised them that as leaders and representatives of the society, they have a duty towards the people to fulfill the promises they had given to the people, and to remain honest in discharging their duties. The leaders should make it a point TO HELP people from ALL THE RELIGIONS without any discrimination". Do not worry my friend, the services of our community towards the society will continue as usual in the midst of every storm, as it was, is now and ever shall be, by the grace of Jesus. Have a nice day Mr. Shetty.

As far as I know IFCA under the Chairmanship of eminent Philanthropist Ronald Colaco only the Christian Organization encourages and motivates Christians to join Politics,
    immaterial of Political Party affiliation.
The onus rests on Mr. Walter Cyril Pinto, the New Diocesan Catholic Sabha President to implement one of their motto's of Political awakening among the Christians more vigorously.
All the best to all newly elected Gramma Panchayath Members. Serve all your People Sincerely and Honestly.God will bless you immensely.

All religions including HINDUISM should be kept away from Politics and Governance.
We need to look at India as a strong, united, secular country not at all water-tight compartments, divided on basis of religion, language, caste and creed.
The new generation has definately bigger and responsible roll to play.

It is very unfortunate that today, the most peaceful and peace loving community is being suppressed & oppressed by many for their personal gain & their service to the society is completely unrecognised & neglected.

referring to one of the speakers that the christains are not represented properly in politics, one must take into consideration that there is NO unity among christians. unless we join hands togther we will not have any representatives in politics. or else we are a divided house. We have had many christains leaders in the past who have contested assembly elections and have not got even 15% of the christain votes from their constituency.
