Media Release

Doha, Jun 20: The much awaited second phase of the Annual Talent Competitions organized by the Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar were held on Friday evening, June 18, 2010 at the Ashoka Hall of the Indian Cultural Center. Competitions which were initially scheduled for May 28, 2010 were postponed as a mark of respect to the victims of the Air India Crash in Mangalore.  It is the sixth time that MCC is organizing this talent contest which is open to all Konkani speaking Mangaloreans in Qatar. The evening began with a prayer by Daphney Lobo followed by a welcome note by the newly elected President Richard D'Souza.  Reena Castelino & Riana Pinto greeted the judges. The programme was anchored by Shalini Monteiro and Glany Fernandes.

The second phase of the contests comprised of the Konkani Speaking, Family Photo, Konkani Quiz and Konkani Singing competitions. The judges for the Konkani Speaking and Family Photo were Edward Sequeira (Eddie Sequeir) , Mable Fernandes and Richard D’Souza. As noted by the judges, it was heartening to see little children speak in Konkani so fluently and the creativity and originality in terms of both costume and theme for the family photo competition was amazing.

For the Konkani speaking competition the children had been given the topics ‘Mujem Kutam’, ‘Mujem Iskol’ and ‘Manglur’ depending on their age group.

For the family photo competition the families walked up to the stage and arranged themselves as if they were posing for a photograph and were judged on for their costumes, pose and presentation.

The participants of the Konkani written Quiz were given 50 questions, spanning all spheres about Mangalore, in Konkani, with multiple choice answers.

The Konkani Speaking, Family Photo Competitions and the Konkani Quiz were introduced for the first time in the six years of the competitions.

For the Konkani Singing Competition which followed, the participants from little children to the adults sang Konkani songs which the audience enjoyed thoroughly. Truly the end result was a testimony of the dedication and the number of hours of practice put in by the performers.

The judges for the Singing competition were Ivy Rosario, Lance D’Souza and Rupesh D’Souza.    Judges were in full praise to the organizers for giving this platform to the young children and adults alike and requested parents to make use of this platform and encourage and support their children in their active participation and also were happy to see  the improvement in the quality of competitions.

Remy D’Souza, Katipalla entertained the audience with the Konkani number ‘Anjelina’.

Alwyn D'Souza, the immediate past president, thanked and honoured all the judges with tokens of appreciation. Jessy Mendonca and Lavina Rodrigues manned the registration desk. Gracy Fernandes and Jessy Fernandes were the official timers. Glylon Rodrigues and William Lobo provided the sound support. Melwyn Fernandes was the official photographer of the evening and was supported by Santhosh Fernandes. Reena Castelino put forward the questions of the Konkani Quiz to the audience and the enthusiastic crowd, which enjoyed every bit of it, answered and collected a bar of chocolate for the right answer.

The response in terms of participation in the contests was good and the audience support was overwhelming. The superior quality of performance was a clear indication of the enthusiasm of the community members towards the event. After all What's life without competitions and performances?

Come on guys, be a sport. All the competitors in the Family Photo competition were 'families', the only condition of the competition. It would have been nice to see families in traditional Mangalorean costumes...May be next time...Inshallah!

The Adults singing results are very shocking, but every judge will have different point of view. request all the participants to take it in a possitive way, take it as a challenge and deliver the best and prove in GVOM 2010, as most of them are already qualified for the semifinals. All the best guys...
