Bantwal, Jun 21: The commercial buildings at B C Road Junction constructed illegally on government land were demolished on Sunday June 20.
Dakshina Kannada (DK) district deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj, had on Friday June 18, visited the location and told the owners to evacuate as soon as possible as the buildings would be demolished soon.
The DC visited the site where the demolition was taking place and gave some owners time till night to vacate the location. He also promised to shift the main bus stand from the location to a safer place for the convenience of the people.
The DC said that the work can’t be finished in one day, so two more days will be chosen for the work to be completed.
A hundred-year-old tree was also cut down by the bulldozer in the process. The work which was in a slow phase, doubled up after the Bantwal Journalist Association urged the DC to finish the work as soon as possible to make it easier to move around the city.
There was not much rain in the area in Sunday which helped the workers complete their work faster then the rest of the days of the season.
Though there was a lot of confusion amongst the owners about the demolition, the compensation had already been paid to the legal owners by the DC.
