Mangalore, Jun 21: Konkani Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus was posthumously conferred with the papal award ‘PRO Ecclesia Et Pontifice’ by Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’Souza recently at Milagres Church.
On Sunday June 20, parishioners of Jeppu, where Konkani legend Wilfy Rebimbus was born, brought up and spent his life, gathered to offer thanksgiving mass along with the members of the Rebimbus family.
Mangalore Diocesan vicar general Monsignor Denis Moras Prabhu symbolically presented the award again to the Rebimbus family.
Konkani legendary musician Wilfy Rebimbus was bestowed with the honour for his extraordinary services in promoting Konkani music and its distinct folklore in nearly five decades of service.
Monsignor Prabhu celebrated the Holy Mass along with Jeppu parish priest Fr Andrew D’Souza, St Joseph’s Asylum Industrial Workshops director Fr J B Crasta, Jeppu parishioner and priest Fr William Barokose.
Fr Andrew dedicated a song to Wilfy titled ‘Wilfy Rebimbusachi Jini Yek Kani’ (Wilfy’s Life a Tale) and the framed copy was presented to his wife. The medal awarded by the Holy Father was presented to Vishwas Rebimbus, son of Wilfy, by Monsignor Prabhu and Fr Andrew.
Fr Andrew lauded the virtues of Wilfy who was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of Jeppu.
He had served actively in the parish council in key positions throughout his life. The late Wilfy was successful in evoking the emotions of Konkans over traditions, customs and peace derived during bygone years through his melodies.
The members of United Youngsters, the music group promoted and mentored by Wilfy, well-wishers and a large number of parishioners were present on the occasion.
