Congress moves adjournment motion in LS over farm laws

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IANS): The Congress lawmakers on Thursday moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha over the newly enacted Central farm laws.

"I hereby give notice of my intention to ask for leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent importance, namely: The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services) Act, 2020 pushed through by Parliament, have the potential to subjugate India's farmers to a handful of crony capitalists," said the notice read by Congress MP Manish Tewari.

In the Rajya Sabha, the discussion started after the Opposition agreed to discuss the farm laws during the motion of thanks to the President's address. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said: "The government has cited that there is no ritual of discussing anything before the motion of thanks, so all the Opposition lawmakers have agreed to discuss the motion of thanks and take up the farmers issue then."

The government has to find a way out though it has refused to withdraw the farm laws, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the all-party meeting had said that the laws could be put in abeyance for 18 months.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also urged the government to resolve the issue at the earliest.

He asked: "Why is the government fortifying the place? Are they afraid of farmers? The farmers are the country's strength, and the government should talk to them and resolve the issue."

"The impasse is not good for our country and the farmers will not back down. The government must withdraw the farm laws. So, it is better to withdraw them today," he added.

First term of BJP government, from 2014 to 2019 was utilized to tour all nations in the world for badmouthing about Congress and to promise what a chaste/just governance BJP is here to give. Well, God knows how they got elected again despite DeMo and GST announcement. It is the farmers who caught the government by it's neck. Now, don't complain about foreigners intervening with India's problem you should have known it in the first five years that you went gaa... gaa... to the world,

The international community might have not have reacted only if the BJP government had set their ego aside and withdrawn the Farm Laws immediately with the first few meetings with the farmers. BJP thought they could quash the will of the farmers just like when they bulldozed the bills through Parliament without a thorough debate with all stakeholders. Now if Khalistani or Pakistani elements have seen an opportunity to escalate this issue then I fully blame Modi and Co for their lethargy and continuous disregard for the welfare of the middle class and poor sections of the nation.

It would be more appropriate for the govt if it is so concerned about farmers to repeal 3 laws and then again table the bill discuss, explain and debate with opposition, farmers and all stake holders then see how it is accepted by all parties then send it to select committee for scrutiny if it qualifies as law. If govt follows this procedure nobody should have any disagreement on 3 laws. As of now my representative in the parliament did not agree with present laws so I like many oppose it.

The Government is so nervous they failed to understand that the comments by foreigners are on humanitarian basis. They used water cannons and batons on farmers, cut their water and electricity supply, cut off communication/Internet connections and built huge fortified barricades as if the farmers are some terrorists.Shame on this hopeless spineless Modi govt. In the meantime China is now building palatial bungalows inside Arunachal 😭
