Distressed Ryot Attempts Suicide at BJP's ‘Sadhana Samaavesha’
Bangalore, Jun 26, DHNS: A farmer from Belgaum district created a furore at the ‘Sadhana Samaavesha’ here on Friday, by attempting to commit suicide.
Eshwarappa Basappa Sureban (34), a farmer from Mudenur village in Ramdurg taluk of Belgaum district, consumed pesticide around 3:15 pm, when his repeated attempts to seek an audience with the Chief Minister did not materialise.
He was rushed to the KC General Hospital in Malleshwaram. He had obtained a loan of Rs eight lakh from Bank of Baroda, Shahapura branch, Belgaum four years ago. “Out of Rs eight lakh, the bank gave me only Rs four lakh from which I purchased a tractor and a trailer. The remaining amount, however, was not paid despite repeated pleas. Also, the bank refused to provide other farm equipment,” Eshwarappa told the High Grounds police.
Upset over this, he approached the Chief Minister with a request to intervene in the matter. To this, B S Yeddyurappa instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Belgaum to look into the case. This, however, didn't yield any result for him, the police added.
In order to draw the Chief Minister's attention, Eshwarappa sat near the Tripura Vasini Gate and consumded pesticide. The High Grounds police are investigating.
BJP defends acquisition of farmers’ land for industrial projects in State
Bangalore, Jun 26 : The BJP on Friday not only defended acquisition of land from farmers for industrial projects in the State but also appealed to the Opposition parties to cooperate with the Government in this regard.
BJP state president K S Eshwarappa, speaking on the occasion, said had a few farmers in Mysore region not parted with their valuable land for the construction of KRS dam, lakhs of people around Mysore would been left in penury without irrigation facilities for their lands. “The government has been giving market price for land losers as compensation,” he said. He also assured that the government would never give up farmers’ causes.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj praised the BJP government as popular, pro-poor, pro-farmer and development-oriented. She cited programmes - Bhagyalakshmi, Sandhya Suraksha, Bhoochetana, loans for farmers at 3 per cent interest and infrastructure development outside Bangalore. She also gave a suggestion to the State unit of the BJP, “Let us share only the happy moments with the public and settle the differences indoors”.
Rajya Sabha member M Venkaiah Naidu criticised the Congress in Karnataka for visiting Raj Bhavan too often. “Don’t make Raj Bhavan a Gandhi Bhavan. Stop your theerta yatre (pilgrimage)”, he said. Ananth Kumar, MP said water is essential and the State should assert its rights over the Cauvery, Krishna and Kalasa-Banduri projects.
Yeddyurappa, in his spirited speech, said “We will make the State as a model one.”
