Is dowry not forbidden in India? I thought it was. Dowry has become a big irritant in marriage, the would be husband directly or through a dalal (Konkani word: malo) demands that if the girl wants the man she should buy him out - roles are reversed after marriage; instead of the husband becoming the property of the wife by purchase (dowry) she becomes his property! What a cruel turn of events once they are married. And he keeps asking for more, as in this case. May be there is some logic to it. If the father of his wife is rich, in many cases once dowry is given, the daughter is deprived of her share in his property after he passes away. Is dowry then a final settlement. It had happened in my family; because my mother was given dowry 49 years earlier, on the division of property, the sons got all the shares and my mother was told that as she was given dowry, that was it! I hope some one writes an article on dowry harassment and the pros and cons of giving dowry.
