Mangalore : Well-known Writer Victor Rodrigues, Angelore (66) Passes Away

Mangalore, Jul 4: Bestowed with a number of titles including `Konkani Sahitya Samrat', `Century Writer', `Kadambari Samrat', `Sankall Kaniancho Raai' etc., Victor Rodrigues Angelore - the chieftain of Konkani novels, passed away in the city in the early hours of Monday, July 5.
Victor was born on February 8, 1944, to Antony John and Carmine Rodrigues in Angelore. He got his basic education in a local school. His innate flair for writing and passionate love for Konkani blossomed and got fructified in his early childhood.
He was a painter by profession besides being a sign scripter and artist. But he was more famous as a prolific Konkani writer, playwright and novelist. Victor had served 12 years at Fr Mullers Hospital Mangalore and spent 22 years in Bahrain.
Of late, Victor had undergone a major surgery from which he was recouping. A prolific Konkani writer, Victor penned almost 22 novels, famous among them being, `Andhkarachea Khondkant', `Rogtachi Bobatt', `Don Max' and `Paap ani Shiraap'. `Paap ani Shiraap' was telecasted on DD Chandana channel under the title `Kanni Ashi Mogachi'. His novel, `Pratikar' got serialized in Konakni weekly, `Poinnari', for almost 198 weeks, while `Paap ani Shiraap' ran for 219 weeks. Apart from novels for which he is famous for, he wrote six plays and two biographies of Fr Sylvester Menezes and Fr Marian Fernandes. His book on traditional medicines, `Bholaike Daiz', has seen four editions so far. Apart from novels and plays, he wrote short stories and humorous articles.
He was honoured by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi for his contribution to literature, in the year 2000. He was bestowed with Daiji Dubai Award in the year 2006, and Francis Danthy LiteraryAward the same year.
Victor Rodrigues is the son of the late Antony John Rogrigues and Carmine Rodrigues, husband of Celine, father of Lolita / Ronald, Veena / Rajesh, Santosh / Reyana, grandfather of Ralston, Renston, Nikita and Ayush
Funeral will be held at St Sebastian Church, Bendore on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Public viewing will be between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm at the church. Mass is at 3:30 pm followed by burial at the church cemetery. .
