Mangalore, Jul 5: The dawn-to-dusk all India shutdown, following the opposition call for a nationwide stir against rising fuel prices on Monday July 5 with private and public transport services including autorickshaws, taxis, private buses and state-run buses keeping off roads, was near total and peaceful with stray incidents of burning of tyres in certain areas in the twin districts.

The bustling city came to a standstill with schools, colleges, private offices and commercial establishments voluntarily choosing to close down for the day. A few who ventured into work found it difficult to even find a decent place to have lunch. The state government offices and banks were deserted with few employees and lesser customers.

    >

The inter-district bus services between Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod remained suspended. The impact of the shutdown was worse at the railway stations and bus stands with hundreds of passengers, who arrived from outer districts were left stranded in the absence of transportation early on in the morning.

However, essential services such as milk supply and medical stores were exempt from the shutdown. Yet many of the medical shops chose to down their shutters until the evening.

Roads were deserted with shopping complexes, malls and cinema theatres too were shut. Police vans and jeeps parked a strategic spots in the city, ambulances and few two-wheelers and private four-wheelers were the only ones that were witnessed occasionally on roads.

Mangalore, Jul 5: The response to the bandh call in the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada has been near total. Public transport vehicles have not been plying, and absence of auto rickshaws has come as an impediment for those who have to reach their destinations urgently to attend auspicious occasions or emergencies.

While most of the people had advance knowledge of what was to come, people on a visit to the districts from far off places have been caught off guard, as they had planned their visits sufficiently in advance. Some construction workers and coolies were seen waiting at some of the bus stops, waiting for a chance to get something to do and earn for the day.

Many establishments had displayed notices in their premises on Sunday itself, about the impending bandh on Monday. Still, small crowds of hopefuls were seen at a few bus stands and junctions, waiting with a hope that one of the vehicles will give them a lift. Banks, post offices and government offices have reported very thin attendance. However, their functioning has not been impaired, as there is a dearth of customers too.

Mangalore: District Responds Wholeheartedly to Nationwide Bandh Call

Mangalore, Jul 5: A nationwide bandh call has been given for Monday July 5 by almost all the political parties from both the right wing and the left except UPA, in protest against the increase in the prices of petroleum products. The district woke up today to empty streets, scarce movement of people, and closed shutters.

Buses including the school vehicles are off the roads. Their engines did not come to life early morning today. City-based software companies have decided to operate with a skeletal staff, with Infosys asking most of its employees to work on a Saturday to compensate for today’s holiday. Schools and colleges have remained closed, and medical shops, which have been given exemption from the bandh call, were seen operating with partially opened doors.

Various labour organizations, organizations of vehicle owners and drivers etc., have extended support to the bandh call. General secretary of Dakshina Kannada City Bus Owners Association, Aziz Partippady, said that it has been decided against running of the buses in view of the fact that the number of passengers will be very less. Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association president, Bhaskar Salian, did not deny the possibility of the operations of some of the buses resuming by 6 pm today.

Both Dakshina Kannada district police and the city police commissionerate have geared up to maintain law and order in the district, with the help of vehicles, platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and home guards that have been especially been summoned for the purpose, said district superintendent of police, Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao. Police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, also said that the commissionerate has borrowered services of KSRP platoons, 50 vehicles and 200 home guards.

MLA Raghupati Bhat has requested the people to voluntarily support the bandh. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has requested the people to extend their support to the call for a peaceful bandh. Udupi district police department too has braced itself up for the challenge of maintaining law and order during the bandh period.

Protest should not be by the method of Harthals n Bundhs which will bring lot of inconveniences to the general public, sick, old & the travellers. It will create job loss of one day which we poor developing country cannot afford to do so. Harthal is an old fashioned protest and no one should support it.
Try a new method of protest i.e. don't take a holiday on Sunday instead do your regular routine on this day for a change. You may call it Gandhigiri Harthal or Bundh.

Hi Nagesh, The bandh was successful but very sad the UPA govt has not yet rolled back the prices of crude, now what the BJP plan to do I think you suggest them that one day bandh has no effect on them so they should keep Bharat bandh till the prices are rolled back, Why cant your so called leaders of the poor resign en mass from Loksabha to show their solidaritary with the poor than may be the govt. may think about roll back, but none of them will resign because they know they will not come back to power once resigned and the chance of making money will be gone

Really Funny. The law and order machinery in particular has expressed its ability to gear up to maintain law and order in such a large scale but cited "potential break down" in law and order to bypass/dilute established procedures connected with post Mangalore air crash incident or Bhopal Gas Leak and many more such incidents.

How can some of the people can enjoy and feel happy about the loss & damage the nation and its citizen effected by Bundh, damaging others property is crime, the people behind this bundh and the people acted personaly should make to pay all the damages & loss through court, sending them to jail is again national waste, free stay, food and 24/7 security from peopels tax paid money to these people will not do any good for the country & affected people.

Thanks to modern media system beacuse of their effort common people get to know all the on going issues worldwide sitting at home or at offices, many of the hidden acts of political leaders come to light through them, and people take immediate action through comments or whichever way possible to do so,which was not possible in the past.

There is no shortage of foolish politicians and useless political parties in India. The government was giving subsidy to gas diesel and petrol, from where? Any person with little wisdom will understand the money for subsidy comes from the taxes we pay. That is our own taxpayers money it is not coming either from Dr. Manmohan Singh’s pocket or from Mr. L.K.A’s pocket. Most of the diesel and petrol goes to rich people not to poor people who make profit out of it. Some of our own useless politicians cunningly provided this subsidy only to show that they are doing something for the poor. However Poor people were totally dependent on firewood and bicycles even now. This government wants to set right all those wrong decisions taken by the earlier governments including of congress. I strongly support the decision of withdrawing all the subsidies and reduce the taxes in the coming years. I also want the government to increase the bank interest rate for senior citizens as they also have to live their life and be independent. India shut down is a foolish decision which no sensible person will support.

Bandh, bandh, bandh! What is this nonsense. Why do these well educated politicians and netas call or influence the general public to support for a bandh? OK. Price rise is obvious and one has no control over it and is applicable to all classes of people. Nobody is getting poor if price of essential commodities shoot up. They will reduce the unnecessary expenditure and ready to bear with the situations.
Why don't these politicians sit together and discuss collectively to find out the reason behind price rise? Sitting inside I can also tell it is successful, but did anybody think about the people who are working on daily wages and earning for the day? Rupees 13000 crores is for the govt. treasury and what about the people who are not able to have their one time food also? Whoever has called todays bandh, have you taken care of the affected people?
The answer is no to all the questions. So, in future "woh mere watan ke logon, jaag jao, ankhen bandh rakhkar kaam naa karen.

Its nice to see people getting all worked up abt Rs. 13000 crores (or whatever that amount is) due to bandh.

But where were the same people when Manipur was blockaded by groups from nagaland for 69 days and aam aadmi suffered for 69 days.

Where were these same people when food grains were rotting in FCI godowns and the Cricket minister who also happened to be our agri minister was busy with IPL

Where were the same people when govt lost Rs 20000 crore in spectrum scam by A. Raja.

I do not see people writing about NREGS widespread corruption which is costing the tax payer Rs. 65000 crore every year.

Where are the people when the Commonwealth games budget has cost the tax payer 100% more than what it was supposed to be.

Where were you people when the Congress and Trinamool called bandh in West Bengal at the of a hat???

Rs 13000 crore is a small amount to pay if the central govt realises its responsibility.

All the talk of petrol de-regulation is Bull shit. The crude has eed $3 since the de-regulation what is the change in petrol prices in India????/

WILL THE PRICE OF FUEL COME DOWN? Did anyone achieve anything by this BUNDH?. This bundh shows the apathy of our opposition parties. If they were strong enough they should have taken the govt. to task in the parliament FLOOR, and not to call a bundh and paralyze the whole nation. Even Congress used same tactics before. As some one said in his comments we were better off in the British rule. As the crude prices have raised in the international market, so the fuel prices are hiked. Can the opposition suggest a good remedy to this fuel price hike? Rather than resorting to such acts. Anyway everyone had a good day of rest.

Well this bandh is just a Political Gimmick. Country has progressed and all of the business houses are high tech today, because of these bandhs there is a very high possibility if operated some miscreants may damage their property. Most of the offices which are closed today are working on their week end, that means its not a bandh. This is one face. Now the second face the daily wagers, the people who fixed their weddings today, the people who scheduled their travel to their overseas employment, will the foreign companies care what is this bandh? May be the candidate paid thousands of rupees for visa and travel arrangements, which must may been decided before bandh. Guys think if you are or were a victim.

We always blame what we have achieved in 60 years after the independence, on other hand we boast we are developing and leave behind other countries, what we are up to. We compare our self to developed countries, incidentally today is USA independence day and we consider it is a developed country and yes it is, guys 225 years of independence and we are just 60 still am proud, we lack tolerance if any bandh a common lay man who do not own a scooter can easily burn a train, a small argument and we end up in a murder. Country lacks education, tolerance countryman ship, and brotherhood. I bet India will stand tall one day none of these events will be successful in coming years, but me and you wont be there to see it, then why not now we make this a better place?

They increased the prices stating thet the oil companies were running under loss and the government was compensating for them. What's wrong in that moreover its the tax payers money. They are behaving as if they are loosing money from their own pocket. So they are putting the burden on the common man.Do we vote for the parties to look after the companies or we the people???So why raise money to compensate for loss to oil companies??

This band call shows the opposition though after much delay, finally paid attention to the cause of common man and the nation-wide public support vindicates the same. The Industrialists / MNCs owned Media did not pay right attention to the cause of common man and didnt really focus on the issue of price rices. Opposition too were more or less spending time eoofrts and energy on other issues whether it is Telangaga or other smaller issue. Congress kept on playing their game showing the faces of Sonia, Rahul and other leaders to mislead the people, as if govt is being run by some other party. However finally time has come when Opposition have tried to focus on the cause of the common man and tried to rope in public to show the importance of the issue. Although I agree no matter whatever one does, it is doubtfull that this will help curb the price rise. Because congress is synonymous with price-rise, only during last non-congress govt rule was the period when price rices were not issues consistently for long times.

The global prices of oil is up, but the govt. can do its bit by reducing the fuel surcharge and cess on petroleum products to protect its citizens interest, this is the job of the opposition parties to educate the common man, rather than vandalise and close all the educational institutions and offices and incur a further loss of over a 1,000 crores to the country. the worst hit is the daily wage earner. the opposition politicans should be able to convince the govt to roll back the prices of fuel, only then will the bandh be termed as a success, by forcefully holding back people from performing their duties isint justified and politicans courting arrest is all just an eye wash. the political class should learn that indians are smarter today, thanks to media coverage and we arent fools to believe them. If they are so interested in improving the lives of common people or (aam admi) , they should work ways to bring back all the black money stacked in swiss banks, people like lalu prasad, shibu soren, the reddy bros and all the corrupt politicans should be brought to book, the amount generated through this exercise will surely reduce our fiscal deficit and help all indians lead a better and respectful life. This is the way we can reduce the burden on the common man.

Bundh is a democratic way of peaceful protection. When international oil prices are stable, there is no justification in increasing fuel prices. Please look at the poor people. Rs 35.00 increase in LPG. UPA government talks about poor people and does nothing for them. PM is making statements of bringing the prices down. On the contrary they are taking inflation further high. Govt should immediaely reverse the price hike. And now about BJP. So called BJP govt. recenty increased the milk prices. Then nobody raised his voice against govt.

A Bundh is held to protest something and here it is the price rise. With today's Bundh Crores of Rupees are lost in business which will further affect prices as commodities become short in supply. The Hotel Toursm etc comes to stand still. The suffering is shared by all except those politicians who are paid to protest. Several people have to go to bed hungry today since they cannot go to work. Millions of work hours, study hours are lost since Factories, schools and Colleges are closed. People who are sick cant reach hospitals easily.

No doubt prices are high and this is world wide phenomenon. If Karnataka Govt reduces Petrol and diesel taxes marginally, it could be blessing to people. It is one of the highest in the country. Isn't it enough to have a protest somewhere and in some prominent place about prices and allow the poor man to live peacefully. May be we could compare how many times the Previous Govt and present Govt raised prices and how many times they rolled them back. Mind you bus tickets are already raised and if prices come down will they change? May the Almighty enlighten our minds.

      GOOD NEWS..... BANDH SUCCESSFUL

Later today in the evening the parties who supported this bandh will claim the above said statement that the bandh was suceessful(some percentage wise). Can anybody calculate the amount of loss incurred today because of the bandh in our whole country. Can all the politicians who called & supported this bandh compensate by paying atleast 1 day salary from whatever they get (whether he/she is a MP/MLA/city corporator or whatever). We are very much sure that 100% the prices which are hiked are never going to come down......... so whats the use of again claiming to media that the bandh was successful(We have to take into account the number of untoward incidents already taking place through out the country from morning here) & at what cost???

If the Bundh is a success in Karnataka it is due to the blessings of the BJP Govt . The "Karnataka Manthries" can count all the black money they have made till date peacefully.

The Bundh is a show of goondaism with State protection.

Every educated person knows that the price of Crude has risen since the past 2 years. The Oil companies in India have accumulated losses to the tune of Rs 60,000 Crores.

People scream when the price of petrol / LPG /Diesel goes up . At the same time one must see the movie theatres full with middle class people paying even Rs 50/- or Rs 100/- for a ticket to watch their favourite stars . At the same time one must see the brisk sales of alcohol at every wine shop in Karnataka .(I leave it to the people to watch the site at the Liquor shops in the evening after the bundh).

The BJP politicians in Karnataka are fooling the people. The loss due to theft of Iron Ore in Karnataka is valued at more than Rs 3000 Crores.

How many BJP Ministers in Karnataka have openly asked for a CBI enquiry into the Iron Ore theft or Loot ? Will they also openly ask for a bundh on that score ?

Karnataka State is being Looted !
