Sharjah, Jul 7: A massive fire that broke out in the 12-storey Al Kuwaiti Tower residential building in the Al Buteena area on Al Orooba street here on Tuesday evening left some of the upper floors completely gutted.

There were no reports of casualties except for some residents who had to be attended to immediately for breathing problems.

Sharjah Police was notified about the incident at around 6.05pm as the fire first started on the first and second floors which were completely gutted before spreading to the floors above.

Colonel Wahid Al Serkal, Director of Sharjah Civil Defense said the main cause of the fire is yet unknown but said it could have resulted from a gas cylinder explosion.

“The top floors of the building were completely gutted while the mezzanine and the ground floors remained intact. The debris was seen all over as sparks were thrown into the air from the burning building.”

“Six people residing at the building  who suffered from inhalation problems were admitted to the hospital.
The outer facade of the building is made of fibreglass which led to the spread of the fire in seconds,” Colonel
Al Serkal added.

Colonel Mohamed Eid Al Mazloum, Director of the Sharjah Police Operation Department said, “We cordoned off the area and we worked hard to ensure that the fire did not spread to the neighbouring areas full of other residential buildings.”

“Fire brigades from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain contributed in controlling the blaze and the traffic below was shown
alternate routes. Hydraulic machines and water pumps were used to control the blaze.”

“We have a mobile car to help us control all the operations on the roads. Helicoperts were also used to supply additional water to control the flames.”

“Twenty-five fire engines and equipment were used to control the fire that continued till the late hours and explosions were heard throughout.”

“The residents of the building were evacuated from the building using the building ladder and we transferred two old men and a woman to Al Kuwaiti hospital after they fell unconscious and suffered from breathing problems,” Colonel Mazloum added.

I'm living in Sharjah since 3 years and we also had a fire due to a technical defect in our house 1 year back. All these fires are coming from wrong usage of sometimes bad quality equipment along with the sometimes very bad installations. Someone should have a look into this and should try to increase the security standards like in other parts of the world.
Thanks to god that nobody lost his life. Currently I feel that the fire in Sharjah are dramatically increasing but still nobody looks into safety quality of installations, usage of equipments, etc.
I hope there will be an insurance which will replace the poor people in this house whatever they have lost.
We didn't have this luck that our house was insured. Insurances for residential buildings should be mandatory for the owners.
I hope that nothing like this will happen in future anymore.

Huh ! A very important identification when in a foreign country is a Passport. Though those who are on employment visa will have their Passport with their sponsor, the family members' document will be somewhere in the house. With the holiday season approaching, if such documents perish within minutes, imagine the hassles one has to go through to get them all over again !

ONCE AGAIN FIRE..THis time 1/2km from my residence where one of my colleauges is staying with his family.I came to know that he and his family escaped unhurt but all his belongings became ashes in no time.Residents of the building mainly from Kerala and other parts of South India. Just a month back, massive fire destroyed National Paints factory which is located near my company. I think safety of buildings in Sharjah is not at all upto the mark.May God give the victims strength to bear this unexpected tragedy.Let them stand again from the ashes like a phoenix bird.

Some people simply do not follow the safety regulations and rules while cooking etc either with the gas stoves or the electricity, and possibly this could have led to the fire. Sometimes the fire could take place due to overloading with the extensive use of heaters, AC systems etc. May be I am offering these rather over the top views, but in the past, I have personally witnessed such fires taking place in the multi-storied residential complexes on several occasions. Massive photography by Uttam Menezes, by the way, a sad event though!
