Bengaluru, Mar 7: The 57-year-old St John’s Hospital in Bengaluru, run by the St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences under the overall control of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), is establishing a unique facility for senior citizens in need of healing, rest and rehabilitation called The St John’s Geriatric Centre.
This geriatric centre will be located on the campus of St John’s Medical College Hospital on Sarjapur road, Bangalore.
The foundation stone of the Centre is being blessed at a brief ceremony on March 9 by Most Rev George Antonysamy, Chairman of the Governing Board of St John’s.
The Centre is expected to be functional by the end of 2022.
The St John’s Geriatric Centre is planned as a 65-bed care facility for elderly persons requiring short stays of 4-6 weeks. It will offer transitional care (for those discharged from hospitals following a fracture or stroke for example but not ready to go home), intermediate care (for those elders whose caregivers find it difficult to look after them because of a change in their health status) and respite care (for those elders whose caregivers need respite for short periods). It will not function as a place for a permanent stay.
The Centre will also be a base for training of different cadres of personnel for the care of elders, a Research Centre for research on ageing and geriatrics, and a Community Engagement/Outreach hub where educational and other activities will be organized for elders and their caregivers in Bengaluru.
The Centre will be managed by St John’s and draw on the expertise of St Johns’ Medical College, Hospital, College of Nursing and Research Institute.
The St Johns Geriatric Centre is being built and equipped through philanthropic support. Early generous commitments by individual and institutional donors have enabled a beginning, and additional support is keenly sought as the construction progresses.
St John’s is recognized under Sections 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act to receive donations from individuals and corporate entities under CSR programs.
