Toronto, Jul 11: On a sweltering July afternoon music fans from across provinces of Canada and neighbouring states of America gathered at the Meadowvale Theatre to witness the first ever musical nite of Melwyn Peris in Canara Kala Saanz 2010.
The musical show started with the singing of the National anthem of India and Canada by the little children.
Flavian Pinto in his opening address welcomed the guests and gave a precursor of the six years of the musical journey of Canara World Foundation, right from its inception. He said that Canara World Foundation was the only organization outside India and Gulf countries, who had succeeded in bringing so many Mangloarean performing artists to North America.
Donald Alva compered the show in a gracious manner. The curtain raiser was the famous song ‘Konkani Kalakaram” sung by Melwyn and the local talented singers Gerry D’Mello, Wilson D’Souza, Lara Rebello, Sonia Monteiro, Lawrence Pinto and Manoarh. They were well complemented by Joyson D’Souza’s music. The songs “Jane” “Chintham” “Dabazo” “Konn Tho Xolo”“Mhataro Ghov” “Sobith Xoli” “Mogachem Mol” “ Soro Koincho” “Ek free” “Sophia” “Dadbad Naach” & “Hein Mangler Amche” went on rolling by and so did the time. The fans left the auditorium wanting more songs and jokes.
The Yodelling king yodelled his way into the hearts of all Mangalorean’s in Canada. As the fans departed from the theatre there was nostalgic feeling in the hearts of all the audience that had either heard him before or heard him for the first time.
The stupendous display of dances by Oliver Mathias, Crystal Lobo, Vinisha and Clarissa D’Souza, Samantha and Savanna Goveas, Melden and Meghan Pereira, Bhavana & Sid Pereira, Clementina & Lawrentina D’souza, Joylin Pinto, Natasha D’Souza, Larsen and Lloyd Pinto and Nishant D’Mello and Priston Monteiro added glitter and glamour to the show.
The audiences were in splits of laughter by the ace performance of local comedians -Flavian Pinto, Max Mendes, Rony Monteiro, Wilson D’Souza, Prescilla D’Souza and Nancy Mendes. The jokes were ably directed by Flavian Pinto and Fr Henry Alva.
Miriam Pinto in her superbly addressed speech briefed the audience on the works of Fr Edwin D’Souza, a native of Moodubelle, Mangalore and currently serving at the Saints Martha and Mary Parish, Mississauga and has been residing in Canada for the past three decades. He was honoured by Paul Mathias with the community leader award for his guidance and selfless acts to the Konkani community in Canada.
Sandra Alva spoke about the institution of the Henry & Rose Castelino Excellence in Education Awards.
This year's awards were bagged by Aaron Pinto in the Sr. Category presented by Irene Mathias and Anishka Saldanha in the Junior Category presented by Ingrid Pereira. Nancy Mendes addressed the gathering during her felicitation speech about Canara World Foundation endeavour to recognise the outstanding contribution to music, culture and art by conferring on artists the prestigious 'Canara Kala Sanketh' award. This year's award was presented to Melwyn Peris by Max Mendes, for his outstanding contribution to the music industry.
Avitas Adolphus Coutinho (Dolla) was also presented with the 'Canara Kala Sanketh'- life time achievement awardby Martin Menezes for his life time contribution to Konkani drama and music. Flavian Pinto received the award on behalf of Dolla.
Melwyn Peris addressed his fans and thanked the organisers and the Konkani community of Canada, for giving him an opportunity to perform in North America. He also thanked his family and his wife for supporting him in his musical career. Melwyn requested the audience to observe a minute of silence and dedicated a soul stirring song as a tribute to late Konkan Kogul, Wilfy Rebimbus.
