Bus strike: Karnataka invokes act to invalidate strike call

Bengaluru, Apr 10 (IANS): Karnataka on Friday invoked provisions of the state Industrial Disputes Act to invalidate the indefinite strike call given by the Karnataka State Road Transport Employees League (KSRTEL) since April 6, throwing public transport across the state out of gear.

According to the provisions of the act, the government can intervene at any given point of time to invalidate the strike call given by any employees union.

The government has sent this circular to all four transport corporations, which are responsible for inter- and intra-state transport with a total fleet strength of 26,000 buses and 1.37 lakh employees.

Government officials believe that this is a second step towards invoking provisions of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against agitating employees.

"The first step being dismissing few employees from these corporations. Already, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) fired 96 trainee staff on Thursday evening and around 60 trainee staff on Friday evening is case in point," an official said.

This act provides an opportunity to quell the rebellion, the official said, adding that we "can wean away large chunk of employees to our side to tide over the crisis".

Meanwhile, KSRTEL's honorary President, Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, asserted that employees stand united and none of them were worried about the government invoking ESMA or any other draconian acts to dissuade employees.

"We are continuing an indefinite strike on Saturday too. The government not only acted adamantly but also lost its humane touch by not releasing March salaries of our members. This is unheard off. This is not the way employees are treated," he said.

Not paying salary of march is very bad. Govt should think about this. If Govt has not paid salaries of last month, does the govt have legal right to appoint temporary servants? Will anyone come for that? Should workers work for free?

Tougher times ahead for everyone because of corona. when the gov. is inviting employees for a dialogue they should come forward and present their demands and leave the gov. to decide earliest within some minimum time frame. On one hand gov. does not want to run the organization with loss. If employees are not satisfied they should resign an the gov. should immediately settle their claims and call for fresh appointments with conditions. Definitely with employment opportunities rapidly shrinking, companies sacking people, slashing salaries and putting this will enhance first-time job seekers to put their dreams and ambitions forward.

Middle class workers should be paid their salaries on time or how are they going to run their houses? The stoic stand taken by their leader shows they are in deep financial trouble! Recently read some where how it's employees & families had taken to roadside hawking! Suicides have become an evey day affair! How come the right have become way richer; and poor workers are not even getting their dues on time! Only those who have gone through such financial distress can understand their pains!

Do you know there are many employees in KSRTC and BMTC who have not been receiving payments regularly? There are dues for many of several months.... Without knowing the in and out, kindly dont suggest your opinion.... By the way, who is responsible for the such situation in India? is it not the ruling government?? First with their idiotic Noteban policy, then GST, then their Finance Ministry failure policies, and then all of a sudden announcement of contrywide lock down... By the way, you can say that when others job are in danger, atleast these guys are having jobs... Does it mean one need to work for whatever salary? Does it mean to work for months without salaries ? They dont earn in 50K per month to say that, delay in payment can be adjusted for a month or two. All they get is 10K to 25K per month and when its not been received regularly then how do they run their house??? Also its a government organization, if its suffering loss, then its the government job to take out amount from its treasure and pay regularly, after all why are public paying so much tax for each and every thing, only to fill politicians pocket???? Road Tax, Transport tax, GST on each and every item purchased, wealth tax, Income tax, health tax, Educatation cess, Service tax etc. etc... to name a few.. Where does such amount go?
