Mangalore: Cleft Lip, Palate Camps at Hospitals in City from Aug 7

Mangalore, Aug 4: Rotary International Dist 3180, as part of its community service programme for the year 2010-11 will organize a free Cleft Lip and Palate camps in its revenue districts Chamarajnagar, Mysore, Kodagu, Hassan, Chickmagalur, Shimoga, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.
The camps will be conducted in association with A J Hospital & Research Centre, Kshema Hospital, Unity Hospital & Smile Train.
The inauguration of the year- long project will be held on Saturday August 7 at 9.00 am at the Conference Hall of A J Hospital & Research Centre. The project will be inaugurated by Rtn Jnana Vasantha Shetty, Rotary governor Dist 3180. The chief guest will be A J Shetty, president, A J Group of Institutions. B Ashok Hegde, general manager, Karnataka Bank will be the guest of honour. Rtn Dr K Mohandas Bhandary, chairman, Rotary Dist Community Service, Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery will preside.
Dr Dinesh Kadam, Dr Sanath Bhandary, Dr Rajesh Hukkeri, Dr Vikram Shetty and Dr. Musthafa will conduct the surgeries. These surgeries will be conducted totally free at A.J. Hospital & Research Centre, Kshema Hospital and Unity Hospital. In addition to the Surgery being done free, the patients will be offered free food and accommodation and Rs 500 will be paid towards traveling expenses.
Cleft Lip & Palate is a birth deformity, which occurs one in 700 live births and there are 14 lakh children suffering with this deformity in India. If neglected, this defect not only causes disfigurement of the face but also affects speech, hearing and teething thus crippling the overall physical, psychological and social development of the affected child. This can be successfully treated by Plastic Surgery done at an early age. This Free treatment for cleft lip and palate is open to all children and adults with such deformity.
