Mangaluru: District administration orders to use industrial oxygen for medical purpose

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 27: As the demand for liquid oxygen has soared suddenly due to the increasing cases of Covid infected patients, the district administration has ordered all stocks of oxygen used by industries for medical use.

The requirement of oxygen for medical use was three tonnes per day before the onset of Covid. Now it has doubled. So the district administration has ordered the use of oxygen meant for industries in treating Covid patients.

Oxygen beds are made ready to face any adverse situation. At present all hospitals in the district have adequate stock of oxygen. But the doctors opine that the stock might not be sufficient if the number of infected patients rises sharply in coming days.

Oxygen refilling is done at three places in the district of Dakshina Kannada including Karnad of Mulky. But there is not a single facility in the whole district where the oxygen is produced. Oxygen is produced on large scale at JSW of Sandur in the district of Bellary and from there it is being supplied to the entire Karnataka state through tankers and cylinders are refilled.

It may be recalled, a meeting over the scarcity of oxygen and its timely supply was held on Monday, April 26 where it was announced by the MLA that oxygen plants will come up at Wenlock hospital and ESI and Bantwal hospitals.

Please note that liquid oxygen producing plants are the same plants where bulk of the oxygen us used for industrial purpose and a small liquid stream, about 10% of the production is taken out for storage which is now being diverted to medical purpose. There is no difference as far as oxygen coming out of these plants whether industrial or medical. Yes care is to be taken while filling oxygen in cylinders for medical purpose so that there is no cross contamination. All gas cylinders are colour coded for easy identification of different gases as filling activities are carried out by unskilled workers and to avoid mix up.

MEDICAL OXYGEN & INDUSTRIAL OXYGEN. IS NOT THE SAME! MEDICAL OXYGEN IS PURIFIED AND FILTERED AND MADE FREE OF GERMS AND CONTAMINANTS FOR EXAMPLE. OTHER TOXIC GASES. INDUSTRIAL OXYGEN IS NOT ABSOLUTELY PURE HENCE NOT FIT FOR MEDICAL USE EVEN IN AN EMERGENCY BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE SOMETHING CALLED PULMONARY ODEMA I E WATER LOGGING IN THE LUNGS WHICH CAN LEAD TO ACUTE HEART FAILURE AND DEATH. SINCE SUPPLY OF GAS CYLINDERS TO CARRY MEDICAL OXYGEN IS A PROBLEM PRESENTLY IN INDIA, BECAUSE OF CYLINDER SHORTAGE THE GOVERNMENT HAS ASKED INDUSTRIALISTS LIKE TATAS TO MAKE AVAILABLE GAS CYLINDERS TO CARRY MEDICAL OXYGEN AND THEY ARE TRYING TO FULFILL THE NEED OF THE HOUR. ONE HAS TO BE CAREFUL BEFORE USING OXYGEN IN CYLINDERS FOR MEDICAL USE ON PATIENTS INCLUDING ASTHMA OR CORONA WHO MAY NEED OXYGEN THERAPY AT HOME UNDER DOCTORS PRESCRIPTION THAT IT IS FIT FOR MEDICAL USE. MEDICAL OXYGEN CYLINDERS ARE COLOUR CODED BODY OF CYLINDER BLACK AND SHOULDER I E UPPER PART WHITE. ALSO CONSIDER USING OXYGEN GENERATOR FROM AIR AT HOME WHICH SUPPLY PURE AND UNINTERRUPTED OXYGEN BUT IT CAN'T SUPPLY 100% OXYGEN! NEVER USE OXYGEN AT HOME WITHOUT DOCTORS PRESCRIPTION BECAUSE HIGH AMOUNT OF OXYGEN WITHOUT NEED AND OVER LONG PERIOD CAN LEAD TO LUNG DAMAGE!

The Oxygen per se - ---- Ind / Med / is not the main issue but contaminants- O2 Filling for Human use -- more care on safety etc - Special tanks -- But these are desperate situations - however companies will not acccept any liablities -- if used in medical --

The second covid wave is now moving onto smaller cities, but the pattern is similar. District administration should be able to plot the Bangalore wave and simulate the same to DK district in order to make a reasonably good estimate of the covid numbers at the peak of the second wave. This will help in estimating the required numbers of covid care beds, oxygen and ventilator requirements and for better preparation so that the sufferings of the people is minimised when the covid peak hits. As far as the oxygen requirement is concerned, the filling stations should consider filling their cryogenic bottles to the fullest and also explore the possibility of quickly augmenting the capacity of storage( some bottles are being airlifted). However the talk of setting up of oxygen plants now may be of little use for the second wave and definitely should give some comfort if there is third wave.
