Congress to Launch New Agitation Against Illegal Mining

Bangalore, Aug 12 (PTI): Seeking to step up pressure on the BJP government, the Congress in Karnataka on Thursday said it would adopt an agitational path for three months on illegal mining issue through rallies in district and revenue division headquarters.

"September, October and November would be months of agitation by Congress," KPCC president R V Deshpande and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah told a joint press conference in Bangalore on Thursday.

The rallies would not only highlight the illegal mining issue, but also the need for a CBI probe into it and "failures" of the government, they said.

The Congress' move comes three days after it concluded its 320 km padayatra from here to mine-rich Bellary district against the BJP government, with the spotlight on illegal mining.

The party had embarked on the 'Nadarakshana Nadige (save the state walk)' targetting ministers K Janaradhana Reddy and his brother Karunakara Reddy, mining magnates from Bellary, after accepting their challenge in the state Assembly to set foot on their home district.

During the three-month agitation, the party would also interact with those affected by last year's floods in many districts of the state, listen to their grievances, take up their cause and press the government to solve their problems, the Congress leaders said.

"The Chief Minister is involved in the loot (of illegal mining)," Deshpande alleged.

Siddaramaiah referred to power cuts in the state and said farmers have been left in the lurch.

"Yeddyurappa says he is helpless that he can't give power. He should somehow purchase power and provide it. Otherwise, he should resign," he said and charged the government with "financial indiscipline".

*The scale of corruption in Mining is a National Calamity.

*Mined at a legal pace, Bellary has enough iron ore to last 30 years. But it is likely to be ravaged in just six.

    * The Beijing Olympics sparked a huge demand in China for iron ore. This triggered an ugly greed in Bellary.

    * Most mine owners have their private army of guards, armed with SLRs. Even officials fear entering the sites.

    * Young men between 15 and 25 have stopped studying. They’ve been given bikes and phones and made to spy.

    * The Reddys pay Rs 27 per tonne of ore to the state. They sell at Rs 7,000 and make about Rs 20 crore a day.

    * Reddy is building himself a 60-room house with bomb-proof shelters and a helipad for his night-vision chopper.

    * Reddy’s money funded ‘Operation Kamal’ that brought the BJP to power in Karnataka. Delhi is their next stop.

Nagesh Mamu please note that if CWG games are investigated by the CBi a lot of BJP heads will also role. There are many BJP leaders who are heading sports bodies in India and one expample is Mr. Vijay Kumar Malhotra one of your tallest leaders. Also understand that the whistle blower for the CWG is Mr. Mani Shanker Aiyar who is a congressman. None of your leaders were concerned before he started complaining. Also understand that Mr. Gill our sports minister wanted all heads of sports bodies to have limited terms, but none of your BJP leaders supported him as they are cosily sitting on as heads of many sports bodies. Finally please note that all contracts for the CWG games stadia were awarded while BJP was ruling both at the centre and in Delhi. Therefore if a CBI enquiry is held then lots of BJP heads will also roll.......unfortunately if that happens you guys as usual will call the CBI as the congress bureau of investigation.

I think Mr Navin Sequira is not aware of the commercial Laws.In Export business Ther is no Tax as all money that comes is through Official channels and that brings Foerign exchange to the country .In any country in the world ther is no tax on export In fact in China they give you Incentive for export because by exporting you are bringing US Dollars into Country .In India also in many goods we get Duty drawback as the incentive .

There is no Sales tax or even Octroi in Maharastra for any export goods .But In Karnataka they charge Rs 27 per tonn as the Road tax .Many exporters try to eveade thie and Transport and that what is called Illegal Mining Lokayukta headed by Santhosh Hegde is Probing on this .But if you see on the Birds eye view of the business ther is nothing as illegal as swindling here .If we don not have foreign exchange we cannot bring any imports How we will be buying Computers,Mobile phone.TV sets ,Life sving equipments ???

To stop illegal mining, cong. first has to throw its members who are in illegal mining business, like Anil Lod, Shivkumar, etc. Preach what you practise, otherwise it will have value.

Irrespective of which party one likes, it is true that illigal mining is BAD for all of us. These mining lords (BJP/CONGRESS/JDU/ECT) steal the ore, dont pay any taxes, dont pay any taxes on the profits and thus making loss to the GOVERNMENT. Now it is our state government or people of karnataka who are the loosers. We dont get good rads, no water supply, nothing - Irrespective of the partline we all are suffering. If you did not see a new road, it was because of the lost revenue due to illigal mining or due to any other illigal activity.
Time to grow up and stand up to this illigal mining.

Outdoor agitation of Cong is over and going to start indoor agitation, which is very much needed to curb the BJP's illegal activities. Cong ruled karnataka for 60 years, it means handed over the well developed state into the hands of BJP.

I am not sure if the padayatra of congress could bring any change. But as a responsible opposition, it is required to keep the ruling party on toes by bringing to their notice any misgivings including corruption. Ruling party my heed to this notice or not. But people are watching and they will decide in the next election looking at action and reaction of both opposition and ruling party.

It is highly piteable and sad to note that Congress politicians are involved in a personal attack on Janardhan Reddy .Mr Reddy rose from Middle class Family of a Polceman to a new Rich exporter Exporters bring Foreign exchange .Hence it is a Nation Building porcess .But offcourse it is true that rather than exporting Iron ore we should process Ore into Palltes or steel billets and thne xport at a Higher price .In this Case Congressmen should work towrards Reopening the Great Kudhremukh Iron Ore Company which was closed .That was a very good project that makes Iron ore into Palltes
