Dr V S Acharya Unveils Mahatma Gandhi Sculpture at Malpe Beach

Udupi, Aug 15: A fibre glass sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, built at a cost of Rs 4.5 lac, was installed at the beach on Sunday August 15.
The statue, which is six feet tall, weighs about 150 kg and has been installed on a six feet high stone pedestal.
District-in charge minister Dr V S Acharya inaugurated the statue and said that the state’s department of tourism has sanctioned a grant of Rs 50 lac for developing Malpe beach as a measure to attract more tourists. The grant will be used to develop the road leading to Malpe, provide interlock pavements, and lamps.
The state government has also arranged to install statues of other freedom fighters and further develop Malpe beach. A sum of Rs 10 crore will be allotted for the project, he said.
Deputy commissioner Hemalata, D V Sadananda Gowda, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP and former state president of BJP, MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, Yashpal Suvarna, president, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district fisheries marketing federation, and sculptor of the statue Purushotham Adve were among the guests present at the function.
