Moodbidri, Aug 15: It was a grand display of patriotism as nearly 8,000 students gathered at the Sundari Ananda Alva Campus in Vidyagiri, Moodbidri, to celebrate Independence Day on Sunday August 15 with great zest and spirit.
Dr Ravishankar Rao, reader, Department of English, Mangalore University, hoisted the tri-colour and said that freedom fighters sacrificed their lives to save the nation from the British so that Indians could be independent and live as equals.
“Though it is the 64th birthday of the nation, India with all its developments on one side is facing many problems like poverty, inequality, and lack of education. People have to support each other to grow in all aspects, thus helping the nation to grow”, said Dr Rao.
“We have to be proud to be Indians as this is a secular and democratic nation. We have all the freedom to follow any religion and think creatively to make the nation strong”, he added.
The army wing of the college escorted the guests to the dais.
The Mother Teresa brass band, Honnavar, and Alva’s College band added extra flavour to the celebrations.
