Udupi Power Corp Attacked for Polluting Farms with Salty Sewage

Udupi, Aug 17: Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) was attacked by the residents of Padebettu, Ullur, Tenka Yermau and Kemmudelu here on Tuesday August 17.

The residents complained that the industry was draining salt water sewage to the agricultural farm instead of diverting it to the sea. The sewage dissolves with ash giving the sewage water a red colour tinge. Despite several complaints from locals there has been no response from the company.

The farmers have been suffering losses in lacs due to destruction of crops caused by the sewage. Water in a nearby as well as a pond too have been contaminated by the sewage water.

The locals staged the protest near UPCL at ‘Rama Dwara’ under the leadership of MLA Lalaji R Mendon. Assistant commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu arrived at the spot and informed that the matter will be discussed with deputy commissioner P Hemelatha. He also assured that the UPCL officials will also look into it.

    "DEVOLOPMENT" There are many fans of this word in Mangalore. Those of you who feel that compensation is due, please realise that compensation has been paid in advance to politicians, thanks partly to your votes. "Useless and Harmless person is better than Useless and Harmful actor". Oscar, Salian etc were useless and harmless. The rest you decide. The iron ore fines of Bellary are scattered all over the (old) South Kanara belt and Reddys are called 'ji' for polluting. I salute my friend Suhas, who was instrumental in avoiding a SEZ in a location close to Yermal, which was meant for chemical industries.

    Few weeks back, Daiji reported photographic evidence of gross negligence of Udupi Power Corp. That time it was saline waste water flooding the farm land. Now it is sewage mixed to saline water. It seems me, the plant not having sewage treatment and waste water treatment plants or company saving money by flooding the untreated waste water to farmland. Why not book criminal case against the MD? Is Indian pollution law not stringent? Anyway, these companies bend on loss of revenue (only when public shut the plant with force).

    DEMAND COMPENSATION!
    LET THE COMPANY CONTINUES ITS BUSINESS AFTER GETTING COMPENSATION. AND NOT ASSURENCE FROM THE COMPANY.ASK NOT TO HAPPEN IN FUTURE. DO NOT ALLOW TO THEM BEFORE GETTING COMPENSATION TO ALL LOST CROPS.

    Now people have realised how dangerous this coal based thermal power plant is.This will destroy lakhs of acres of fertile agricultural land,pollute water & deteriorate peoples health in undivided D.K. Stable life of Tulunadu people is becoming unstable day by day becoz of influential land sharks.There ia a nexus between Indusrtials & Govt& KAIDB.We have to do our bit & oppose srongly such dangerous projects at any cost.
