Mangalore, Aug 20: “The staff members and students of a few private colleges had recently organized a protest, holding Mangalore University (MU) responsible for the problems these students are facing. The university is in no way responsible for these problems. The managements of the respective colleges, which failed to adhere to university rules in payment of fees, allotting of internal marks etc., are solely responsible for their tribulations,” clarified university vice chancellor (VC), T C Shivashankara Murthy.

He gave this information at an interaction programme organized at the Press Club here on Thursday August 19, under the aegis of Karnataka Working Journalists Union. He gave details of programmes undertaken, conceived projects and the achievements during the period since he took over charge as the VC of MU five months ago.

“The university is not willing to compromise on the issue of scrupulous adherence to rules and regulations, which are universally applicable to all the colleges under it. The government has specifically directed the colleges to follow the notifications issued by the university. The concerned may treat this as a warning for them,” he added.

He said that justice is done to those students, who suffered because of tabulation manipulations in the BBM examinations in 2008, by appointing an inquiry officer into the irregularities. The departmental inquiry into the tabulation irregularities in October 2008 relating to law examination has also been concluded, and recommendations have been sent to the government to initiate disciplinary action. Criminal suits have been filed against the lecturer and the employees held guilty, he clarified.

He said that steps have been initiated for the integrated development of the university college in the city and Gen Kariappa College in Madikeri. He elaborated about the land sanctioned to MU to open post-graduate centre near Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, plans to construct buildings to house endowment chairs, filling up of vacancies, plans to issue tamper-proof degree certificates that are presently given only to post graduate students, etc.

University registrars, Dr Chinnappa Gowda and P S Yadapadihaya, assistant registrar, Jayashree Kamath, Working Journalists Union president, Harsha, general secretary, Guruvappa Balepuni, and Press Club secretary, Harish Rai, were present.
