Mangalore, Aug 21: ‘Anveshana’, a two-day national conference on direct taxes and allied laws, organized by The Southern India Regional Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Mangalore branch, in collaboration with the Direct Taxes Committee, began at Loyola Hall of St Aloysius College on Friday August 20.

G Ramaswamy, vice-president, ICAI, inaugurated the programme and said that since IT and other sectors are attracting students and there have been changes in the CA exam patterns in the past four to five years, the students should be thoroughly trained in the subject.

U K Basu, managing director, MRPL, was the guest of honour. In his speech, he said that the government is proposing a series of legislations for chartered accountants and added that the opportunities for chartered accountants are great at present. 

Basu added that there is legal support for the chartered accountants and the government is proposing to extend compensation to retail sales tax (RST) vendors and many other opportunities are open to CA students.

T N Manoharan, a director nominated by the government and chairman of the audit committee of Satyam Computer Services Ltd (the present Mahindra Satyam), was one of the chief guests on the occasion. He conducted the first session on direct tax code.

Jayant Gokhale, chartered accountant, and K Raghu, a member of the central council of ICAI, were also present.
