Kuwait: Kullvar Dedicates 'Konkani Day 2010' to Wilfy Rebimbus

Kuwait, Aug 21: To mark the recognition of Konkani as an official language and its inclusion in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution, ‘Konkani Kullvar’, a forum of Konkani writers in Kuwait, celebrated 'Konkani Day-2010’ on Friday August 20, 2010 from 6.30 pm onwards at the Indian Community Senior Girls School, Salmiya. The programme of the day was dedicated to the memory of the architect of Mangalorean Konkani music world, Konkan Kogul, the late Wilfy Rebimbus.
The programme was inaugurated by all the writers and the chief guests present at the dais, by placing the dhump (incense) into a vessel. Lancy Pinto Nayak delivered the welcome address. Shaan Bondel then introduced the concept of Konkani Divas, paid rich tributes to legendary Konkani singer, Wilfy Rebimbus, whose photo was prominently placed on the dais. He also introduced the guests. A minute’s silent prayer was offered for the soul of Wilfy Rebimbus.
During the entertainment part of the programme, various songs from the albums of Wilfy Rebimbus were sung by Lancy Rodrigues, Jovita Fernandes, Joyline Gonsalves, Wilfred Lobo, Cynthia Pinto and Sunitha D’Souza. The gathering was mesmerized, when Fr Harry sung ‘Chaar Disancho Sounsaar,’ along with other singers, soulfully. Hilarious comic skits presented by Kiran Lobo and Peter Pereira were thoroughly enjoyed by one and all.
The felicitation part of the programme started with the welcoming of the chief guest, Fr John Harry D’Souza, to the stage. Ida D’Silva introduced Fr Harry and Gration D’Souza, giving details of their respective achievements. Gration D’Souza, a senior Konkani singer from Kuwait, was honored on this occasion by the chief guest, by garlanding him and presenting fruits, shawl, memento, traditional headgear (Mundaas) and a citation. Fr Harry D’Souza and Gration D’Souza then addressed the gathering.
The major attraction of the day was the Konkani play, ‘Shivonn,’ authored by Shaan Bondel and directed by Lancy Pinto Nayak. Shaan Bondel, Sera D'Silva, Ida D'Silva, Mabel Andrade, Victor Andrade, Antony Menezes, Avil Fenandes and Jeremiah Vaz Goa featured in the play. The music was provided by Joe D’Souza, Sumith Noronha and Anil Pais.
Christine Pinto proposed vote of thanks. In between the programme, surprise gifts were distributed for all age categories. The programme was well compered by Ida D’Silva, Lydia Misquit and Christine Pinto. A houseful crowd provided ample proof of the love and respect Konkani commands in Kuwait.
