Banning Malayalam attempt to snatch the right to speak it: BJP

New Delhi, Jun 6 (IANS): Slamming the controversial order directing all nursing staff at a Delhi government health facility to use only Hindi and English for communication, the BJP on Sunday termed it an attempt to snatch the right to speak in Malayalam.

It also questioned silence of Kerala's LDF government on the issue.

Citing the circular at the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER) ordering the nursing staff to only communicate in Hindi or English and specifically disallowing Malayalam, BJP national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said: "The subsequent withdrawal in a haste clearly indicates we have an anarchist state government for whom the Constitution of India and its recognised language do not matter.

"It is an irony that when this government was in need of oxygen, the request was directed to Kerala and now their attempt to snatch the right to speak in Malayalam amongst each other."

Vadakkan stressed that globally the largest number of nurses come from Kerala, and they have served the country as frontline workers along with doctors and other paramedics.

"They suffered casualties along with doctors and paramedics too. I was also surprised at the deafening silence so far from the Kerala government," he said.

The circular issued on Saturday by the GIPMER nursing superintendent said that a complaint was received against the use of Malayalam.

"A complaint has been received regarding Malayalam language being used for communication in working places in GIPMER, whereas maximum patients and colleagues do not know this language and feel helpless, causing a lot of inconvenience. So, it is directed to all nursing personnel to use only Hindi and English for communication, otherwise serious action will be taken," it said.

The hospital administration, however, withdrew the order on Sunday after the controversy broke out.

Those who adamantly want to speak their mother tongue at workplace can work in their hometown. In public places like hospitals it is sensible to have a common language of communication, which naturally will be the local language. In Mangalore, we make all kinds of circus and gestures to communicate with a Malayalee, because he cannot speak Kannada or Tulu, but when we go to Kerala, they speak nothing other than Malayalam (I had first-hand experience of this). If Keralites are hell bent on speaking Malayalam at workplace, there are enough hospitals in Kerala. Moreover, when one plans to go to a new place for employment, it is his/her responsibility to learn the local language. Would Tom Vadakkan ask governments of US, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and Middle East to allow Malayalees speak Malayalam at workplace? Being in contact with Malayalee nursing students for two decades, one thing I have observed is that while they refuse to learn/speak Kannada (because we have no problem communicating them in broken Malayalam; one nursing student even asked me when there are so many Malayalee nursing students in Mangalore why haven't I learnt Malayalam), they speak Hindi very well (for the fear of backlash). I think Malayalee nurses working in Delhi have no problem speaking Hindi, it is Tom Vadakkan's figment of imagination, just a publicity stunt.

Nobody is stopping to speak in Malayalam between Malayalam nurses. But if this BJP minister joins them can he converse in Malayalam with them??????...... BJP will never win elections with this cheap stunts nor in WB. BJP should come up with some sensible reason to win Kerala and WB but it’s impossible for BJP to win by mere faking and smear campaign anymore anywhere.

I appreciate the work of the mallu nurses- but to be fair to the patients ( who are from north India) how will they understand mallu language if the nurses talk to them in mallu language???? If the nurses talk in mallu language between themselves, then I don’t think the hospital has any right to stop. But nurses talking in mallu language to the patients SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED

Dear Roland, Fully agree with you that Nurses should speak in the local language to the patients...... but in this matter, 60% of the hospital nurses were from Kerala and they used to speak between themselves in Malayalam, which the Nursing Superintendent like and issued an order some time back, which got rescinded due to protest..... Now to make her case stronger, Nursing Superintendent made a patient write a false complaint and use that as a pretext to re-issue the order...... Your comments are probably based on the understanding of the issue based on the limited contents of this article only.....

We are proud of our language..... Malayalees go places, get assimilated with the local culture, yet retain their identity as Malayalee..... Unlike people from Karnataka especially those from Mangalore..... Frog in the pond idiom / phrases suits people from Mangala Uru better than anybody else as they never venture out of their comfort zones and live with their own illusions as already commented yesterday. https://www.daijiworld.com/news/newsDisplay?newsID=840348

Rahul, Hope you are not bird brained not to understand my comment, very clearly wrote, we go places and ASSIMILATE with the local culture.... Nurses speak Hindi to the patients (language skills may not be the best).... but between nurses which language needs to spoken..... Nursing / Medical Superintendent need not dictate..... What we should speak, what we should wear, what we should eat; we will decide, we don’t accept the hegemony of anybody like you people bowing to the diktats of saffron brigade.... Just because, we are proud of our language does mean that it is a disqualification for a job and our right to work elsewhere.... In case, if the same was a disqualification, the same could have checked at the time of appointment itself...... Hope better sense prevail upon you instead of this bigotry and prejudiced attitude against Malayalees... Assume your hatred is probably because, saffron brigade has been shown their right place by us.

Absolutely mindless stupid remarks by BJP. BJP doesn’t have anything else to accuse its opposition so finding stones in buttermilk for media campaign but making mockery of itself. BJP is far from reality in work places. No wonder BJP ruled states are in disarray and no proper communication. BTW, what language BJP speaks with Gau Matha???????????................

The rivalry between the Medical / Nursing Superintendent and the Malayali nurses is stated to be the reason behind the order..... Delhi Nurses Federation immediately took up the matter and the order was rescinded..... Even Kerala MPs Rahul Gandhi / Shashi Tharoor took strong exception to the order..... Tom Vadakkan need not shed crocodile tears on the issue..... Where was this Tom Vadakkan when Amit Shah / Arvind Kejriwal stated that Vamana Jayanthi should be celebrated instead of Onam???

Any language, Malayalis speak, they will have Malayalam accent..... by the way, these nurses are working for hospital and not call centres to have a neutral accent..... As far as the domain of nursing is concerned, Malayali nurses are the best..... The infant mortality rate and the maternal mortality rate in Kerala is lowest amongst the states in India which we owe to these nurses..... Karnataka's IMR is 3.5 times that of Kerala and MMR is 2.5 times that of Kerala..... Better use your energies to inform Health Department to improve upon these aspects rather than looking at the language skills of our nurses..... Nurses are called Angels in Kerala (though personally do not belief in the concept of angel)
