Mangalore, Sep 13:
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and District Institute of Education and Training orgainized Konkani Teachers' Workshop- 2010 here on Monday September 13.

Academy, president, Kundapur Narayana Kharvi inaugurated the programme.

Addressing the gathering, he expressed happiness on the education department's move to include the language up to std X and also about plans to introduce it up to pre-university level. There is a need to pressurize the department concerned for speedy introduction, he said. He added that Konkani language will soon be introduced in Pratibha Karanji, cultural competitions.

Presiding over the function, DIET principal Philomena Lobo said that there was a necessity to have Konkani as a language of study in schools as Konkani speaking students outnumber Hindi speaking in the region. Government should also give accurate data of Konkani speaking population in the district, she said.

Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino said that the association would  support introduction of Konkani language in std X, XI and XII. The association will support such students with incentives and distribution of books.

Sanchalan secretary Dr Edward Nazreth said that people are of perception that Konkani as a language may soon perish and English will be the standard language. There is a need to change this perception, which has to be undertaken by the teachers in schools and colleges, he observed.

Carstreet Government college associated professor Stephen Quadros gave a lecture on “Konkani text book prose”, Rosario high school headmaster Aloysius D’Souza gave lecture on “Konkani Text book poems”, while Parish priest Sastan Church Fr Valerian Fernandes spoke on “Konkani grammar”.

It may be a up hill task to evince interest in students to learn Konkani language to read and write in Primary schools, forget about High school.
Education is viewed as passport to get best Job in the continent by majority of the people, even lower middle class people. Hence who will encourage their children to learn Konkani (to read and write)other than English and Hindi.Let us be practical.
Most of our aided Kannada medium schools in Mangalore City are struggling hard to get students to fill in the benches. In this circumstances how can we think optimistically is the question?

I appeal to all Konkani Literary Circles and the Sahitya Academy to make available konkani text books of all levels in Book Stores of Udupi & Mangalore Districts or arrange for Konkani Book Exhibition at prime places for a fortnight. I would also appeal to encourage our mother-tongue in Devanagari script along with the kannada script. Our aim should be to also create interest among the adult speaking konkani community along with our schol/college children.

What NEED are we talking about here?? How is this going to benefit any of our children? What are they going to do with this language after they complete their pre-university?? rather then learning a language why don' we give importance to humanitarian service or environmental studies, which would help our children as well as the people living in it!! This is the NEED of the hour, and learning a language is not a NEED, if i want to learn any language i can learn it even now, but if we teach our children on how to life in harmony with humans and nature, that will go a long way. Please don't say that this is a NEED !! Its wasting our childcare's and God's time.
