B S Yediyurappa's parting gift: Hike in DA for government employees

Bengaluru, Jul 27 (IANS): Just hours before resigning from the Chief Minister's post, outgoing Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa on Monday ordered a hike in dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees by 10.25 per cent.

With this, the DA of employees will be 21.50 per cent of their basic pay, according to an order issued by the Finance Department which was under Yediyurappa. The existing DA is 11.25 per cent of basic pay.

The decision follows a representation made to Yediyurappa by the Karnataka State Government Employees' Association about 10 days ago, just a week after the Union government had increased the DA for its staff members from 17 per cent to 28 per cent.

The DA hike will benefit as many as six lakh state government employees, apart from 4.5 lakh pensioners and around three lakh staff employed with various boards and corporations in the state.

The last DA hike was announced in October 2019, soon after Yediyurappa came to power in Karnataka.

The state had then announced a 4.7 per cent increase in DA, but due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, the state government had decided to put the move on hold for a year.

The deferment of the hiked component reduced the DA from 11.2 per cent to 6.5 per cent. The state government employees had been demanding that it be restored.

At present, the state government spends Rs 62,413 crore annually to pay bills, of which, Rs 23,413 crore goes to pensioners.

The DA hike is expected to result in an additional burden of around Rs 7,000 crore on the state exchequer.

C.S. Shadakshari, the president of Karnataka State Government Employees' Association, has been demanding that state government employees' salaries should be brought at par with their counterparts in the Central government.

"There is a wide disparity in the salaries of the state and Central government employees. State employees draw Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 less than their counterparts in the Centre. The state government should rectify this," the KSGEA said earlier.

At such critical times, increase in DA should have been made only to low salaried govt. employees like school teachers, nurses, paramedics, technicians and police constables who have actually worked hard and even suffered during the pandemic.

There is an old saying. If a knife falls on a watermelon or the watermelon falls on the knife, anyway the watermelon will be cut. Similarly the common man will always suffer irrespective of change in CM or government.

He is not paying from his pocket. These govt employees already getting yearly increment & perks. What about private sector employees, nurses, health workers, ladies working in garment sectors. In private sectors, there r people working for 8 to hrs on a meagre salary of 9000 to 10000. These govt employees rcv minimum rs 30 to 40,000/- per month along with paid holidays. He was unfit to be a CM.

Not everyone in govt sector are corrupt and there are many who work honestly. When compared to private sector, govt salary is less and these perks will help the honest govt servants. People who comment on govt employees, should visit and see some depts working very hard without much benefits. It's easy for people to comment but get to know the reality before randomly speaking.

Government employees are getting all facilities from the Government. I am asking the Government to do something for the benefits of poor private sector employees. Most of the government employees do not provide their service sincerely. All departments are filled with bribe. Then for additional gift???

Why only 21.50 percent.. Why not 100 percent.. Means double of their salary... First of all all govt employees are over dozed with all the facilities which a common tax payer in India Is not given in India... Upon that a common man is struggling to meet his daily needs because of price hike in each and everything.. It's that common man's tax money which you are paying to govt employees... It's not your fathers asset...

this country will never improve in the next 1000 years also because of corruption. a second division clerk in govt service gets Rs 30 to 40000 salary whereas in private a manager does not even get Rs 30000. What work these people are doing? What kind of democracy is this? I bet rule of military is better. These bloody politicians of all parties are there just to enjoy the money paid by the public.
