State By-polls: Siddaramaiah Quits as Opposition Leader

Bangalore: State By-polls - Siddaramaiah Quits as Opposition Leader

Bangalore, Sep 16 (IANS): Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka assembly Siddaramaiah of the Congress party Thursday quit his post owning moral responsibility for the defeat of his party's candidates in the two by-polls held Sep 13.

"The outcome is not a mandate against the party but I have resigned owning moral responsibility," he told reporters, following the defeat of the party nominees in the by-polls for the Kadur and Gulbarga South assembly seats.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) snatched the Kadur seat in Chikmagalur district from Congress but conceded the Gulbarga South in Gulbarga district to the Janata Dal-Secular (JDS).

BJP's Y.C. Vishwanath, a medical practitioner, won in Kadur while Aruna Patil Revoor of JDS won in Gulbarga South.

The by-polls were necessitated by the death of sitting members K.M. Krishnamurthy (Kadur-Congress) and Chandrashekar Patil Revoor (Gulbarga South-BJP). Voting took place Sep 13 and counting Thursday.

Siddaramaiah announced his resignation soon after sending the letter to party president Sonia Gandhi.

The state Congress president R.V. Deshpande, whose term has ended, blamed the party's poor show on "BJP's money power and misuse of official machinery".

A jubilant JDS state president H.D. Kumaraswamy hailed the victory of his party candidate Aruna Patil Revoor in Gulbarga South as the victory of the people of the constituency.

Aruna Patil Revoor fought on the JDS ticket as BJP did not nominate her following the death of her husband Chandrashekar Patil Revoor.

All the congress leaders and the supporters dont loose hopes if u loose one byelection or another election you have more support than any political party in India these results are definitely for the short period ,keep hopes alive good luck for the future as some people gave their comments like we need younger leaders with support of old leaders then the congress party will be unbeatable in karnataka .

I wish Mr. Siddu will reconsider his decision and take back his resignation. He has come from Kuruba community, one of the downtrodden and neglected tribe. To reach this level is great. He understand the voice of the Dalits.
Only his weakness is his communication is blunt. That is why he made many enemies both within Congress and amongst others.
Hope Congress high Command will act with maturity.

At least Siddu is having moral values but D K Shivakumar & Deshpande they do not have that they were hand and glove with BJP in defeating their own party candidates. Sonia Gandhi should remove these thugs first and old horses like C K Jaffer Sharieff who all along talking against the party.

Mr. ISMAIL K PERINJE, you made biggest joke of the history. Siddu brought value based politics. You better teach him to speak properly. Above all, let him give respect to others. He always use singular while talking, press release etc. Person can be analyzed based on how he speak (give respect to others). This is the main reason for his failure.

    Mr.Langoolacharya,Beman/USA,
Your comments are exactly correct. This has what happened in Karnataka/DK/Udupi Congress unit.People think that great Doctor is all about great party which is sinking day by day in Karnataka.Good leaders simply look on helplessly.

Recent so called great Bellary padayatra has exposed hollowness in the state leadership of Cong.Just look at a party which boosts 125 years of existence has misserably failed in projecting/proposing state Presidentship for the party and sent the ball to Madam! Simply Ridiculous and shameful.

In Karnataka congress it is good to see that ppl are resigning after taking moral responsibility for defeat, but in ruling BJP if ministers are culprits then also they argue that they are innocent and refuse to resign.... The result is different when u get DNA report. Our CM also supports such a kachada ministers. Doni bidal gotthillada Naavika neenda yenu expect madoovudu sarwajna.....

It is remarkable and we people from Udupi are proud of our leader. He is a very soft person who does not praise himself or brag much. Such people rarely receive any praise. He lets his work do the talking.

Siddu, please do not resign and take back your resignation letter. You are the voice for the voiceless people in the assembly. Your presence is very much required to control this goondaraj. Byelection victory is not at all a victory for the ruling party, it is merely a manipulations of ruling parties. If you feel that it is referrendum for the govt., why they lost in Gulbarga? I beg you, please take back your resignation.

Congress lost the elections and particularly in Kadur where the ion of the candidate was done by Mr. Siddaramaiah. His courage to resign owning moral responsibility has taken his stature to the next level. In the similar fashion Mr. Yedyurappa ed candidate for Gulbarga and stayed in the constituency for 8 days for his success but BJP candidate lost.

In the same way, whether Yedyurappa has the courage to resign owning moral responsibility?
