Chikkamagaluru, Aug 24: The personnel of the cybercrime, economic offences and narcotics (CEN) police station here, who have arrested two persons accused of getting involved with several crimes including circulation of fake currency notes, have recovered an ancient gem said to be worth between Rs 50 lac and one crore.

The police said that the accused had cheated a person from Shivamogga by promising to buy the gem from him and then decamping with it. A complaint in this connection had been filed in Doddapete police station, Shivamogga. The gem reportedly was gifted by a member of the royal family to the old man and that its value was estimated to be between Rs 50 lac and one crore rupees. The gem is a 510.60 carat certified, cat eye gemstone.

Chikkamagaluru police had arrested a gang of people involved with the circulation of counterfeit currency notes in October 2020. Fake notes worth Rs 5.5 lac, vehicles, and equipment used to print the fake notes had been confiscated, and a case was registered in Aldur police station. On the basis of information gathered in this case, Mangaluru city police had arrested some other accused belonging to the said gang and recovered fake notes worth Rs 2.4 lac. A case was registered in Ullal station in 2020. Two main accused who were absconding, were arrested by the city police team led by police inspector A K Rakshith from Mangaluru. One of the arrested accused was facing the case of launching deadly assault on a journalist within Vittal police station limits. The main accused was facing non-bailable arrest warrants in five separate cases. He also reportedly managed a high tech brothel, it is said.
