Udupi, Aug 31: The man who stabbed a woman to death before using the same knife to slice his throat on the national highway near the Robosoft facility at Santhekatte here on Monday August 30, died in the early hours on Tuesday August 31.
Sowmyashree (28), daughter of Vittal Bhandary and Susheela couple living in Kakkunje near Ambagilu, died on Monday. Sandesh Kulal (28), a resident of Alevoor Rampura was admitted to Manipal hospital in a serious condition.
It is learnt that Sowmyashree used to work on contract basis in the capacity of data entry operator for a nationalised bank at Santhekatte, while Sandesh Kulal was a computer operator of a medical shop in the city.
Sandesh Kulal and Sowmyashree were in love with each other for the last seven or eight years. Two brothers of Sowmyashree work abroad and her father is ill. Because of caste and other differences, the parents were not agreeable for this alliance. It is said that engagement ceremony was performed for Sowmyashree with a youth from Moodbidri. Angered by this development, Sandesh had quarrelled with his lover, it is said.
On Monday evening, Sowmyashree, who was returning home in her scooter was stopped by Sandesh who was riding his motorbike, on national highway. After verbal altercation ensued between the two, Sandesh removed a knife he was hiding in his bag and stabbed Sowmyashree and then sliced his own neck with the same knife. The locals immediately rushed to the spot and admitted both of them into a hospital in Manipal. Sowmyashree, whose condition was critical, failed to respond to treatments while Sandesh's condition was serious.
At the spot of the incident, two-wheelers of both the lovers, a bag, knife etc were found. District superintendent of police Vishnuvardhan, additional superintendent of police, Kumar Chandra and Udupi town station police inspector, Pramod Kumar, visited the spot.
Sowmyashree's post-mortem was performed on Monday evening while the Sandesh's will be done later in the day on Tuesday, said police.
