These two drivers had come to Mangaluru with things loaded from Tamil Nadu. When returning to Tamil Nadu, they had parked their lorries near the Padil overbridge within Kankanady police station limits for carrying goods from here to Tamil Nadu during their return journey.

It is learnt that Selvamani had married a girl related to the accused Suresh Kumar. On that issue, a friction arose between the two at the yard. Selvamani at that time was stabbed in the stomach by Suresh Kumar, with a knife. Injured Selvamani had been taken to a private hospital by other drivers in the area, in a lorry. But Selvamani breathed his last at the hospital.

A case was registered in Kankanady town police station. Inspector, Ravi Naik, had conducted investigation and filed charge sheet in the court.

The judge, who conducted hearing, examined 25 witnesses before concluding that the accused was guilty of the said murder. Through the judgement delivered on Wednesday, Suresh Kumar was sentenced for life and was also imposed with a fine of Rs 10,000. The judge also recommended to the Legal Services Authority to pay compensation to the widow of murdered Selvamani. In this case, forensic evidence played a crucial role in deciding the case. Public prosecutor, Harishchandra Udyavar, represented the prosecution in the case.
