Bangalore: Yeddy’s Challenges – Wriggling out of Mining Hole, Following Party Diktat
Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)
Bangalore, Oct 15: The BJP high command has, after the litmus test, directed both Chief Minsiter (CM), Yeddyurappa, and state party chief, K S Eshwarappa, to behave themselves and correct their past follies. The high command feels that arrogant behaviour on the part of these leaders gave rise to a revolt against the party in the state. The central leadership has advised the Chief Minister to organize meetings with Eshwarappa, national general secretary, Anant Kumar, in-charge of party affairs for Karnataka, Shantakumar, and members of the core committee, to discuss threadbare, reasons for the present situation, and ways and means to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated.
It is clear that Yeddyurappa, who had once openly declared that he would mend his ways, after the previous revolt led by Reddy brothers threatened to topple the government, has not succeeded in doing so. At the same time, his efforts to sideline the mining barons from Bellary have suffered a setback, as the Reddy brothers played a vital role in saving the government. There are reports that the mining lobby has succeeded in enticing three Congress MLAs to resign from their seats and join the BJP. However, reportedly, both Yeddyurappa and Eshwarappa have not given a green signal to this move, well aware of the fact that there is a prolonged heartburn among the party loyalists against giving importance to turncoats, and the possible strengthening of the importance of Reddy brothers in the party, if this move is encouraged. Reddy brothers want to ensure that party has a comfortable majority to govern the state.
The fact that the party will have to rely on a wafer-thin majority, if the five independent legislators who have appealed against their disqualification succeed to get their disqualifications quashed through the High Court, has given added power to some disgruntled legislators, who have been vying for ministerial berths. The CM now needs to tread very cautiously, as any wrong step can plunge the government into crisis. He needs to keep the Reddy brothers also happy. It is generally being analyzed that Yeddyurappa has lost the hold he used to enjoy on the party, and henceforth will not be able to take any decisions independently.
The fact that the Congress party did not aggressively try to topple the government, perhaps in a bid to save itself from earning the ‘betrayer’ tag by getting associated with the efforts of the JDS, also enabled Yeddyurappa to survive. Yeddyurappa henceforth, will have to utter every word with caution and take every step after taking other prominent members of the party into confidence, to save himself from the ignominy of being forced to step down, political analysts believe.
