Mangaluru: Garbage collection QR codes in city go without scanning

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 30: The city corporation has hung QR codes to all the houses, apartments, shops etc in all the wards within the city corporation. These QR codes are scanned at the time of garbage collection. The officials can keep tab on whether the garbage collectors are covering all the bins. But it is learnt that most of these QR codes are not being scanned as of now.

Garbage is collected on a daily basis in the city. In order to strike coordination between the city corporation and the smart city, QR codes have been pasted to about 68,000 buildings here. The civic workers have been given mobile devices which have ward-wise information, for scanning. It works within the wards concerned. The civic workers are expected to scan the QR codes of buildings when they visit them each day. But it is noted that the civic workers are given change of areas for garbage collection on certain days. They are then unable to scan the code when they are in wards other than their own. As such, only information about 1,500 buildings reach the smart city command control room.

In course of time, the QR codes system which have been made ward-wise, are planned to be brought within Mangaluru north and south constituencies. As the area widens, the workers will be able to scan the code anywhere in the city. The officials said that the technical faults now encountered are being addressed and a hundred devices will be supplied to civic workers in south and north wards.

These QR codes have been pasted to the compounds of houses, hotels, apartment complexes, stalls, industries etc. /the civic workers have devices to scan these codes. They scan the codes when collecting garbage from the respective buildings. The signals reach the integrated command control of the smart city. If the QR codes of some buildings are not scanned, it is construed that garbage from here has not been collected and this information reaches corporation officials.

Arun Prabha, general manager, Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, says that some QR codes were not getting scanned because of technical problems, and that the process of addressing this problem is on and now almost all the devices are working.

This QR code on gates of residential and business establishments is only fooling people. I have never seen anyone scanning the QR code, will the plastic tags last in our city? Tried to scan with my mobile but does not read the code. Only waste of money by the MCC.

QR codes have been hung on d walls are only for show. At our place, so far neither the garbage collection is done nor it is scanned. It is done only to show to d authorities that something has been done which is a requirement under smart city project. Corruption is going on in all the aspects

It has been a problem since the delay in take of the waste bins as of the staff who are working under Anthony looks very rigid and lazy to answer any calls up. The manager is only taking up every initiative and the QR code smart City was just a simple way to speak out that they are always punctual and neat in picking the trash, But very sorry to say that it's a sign of showcase by them of doing nonsense peace of work.

I have no garbage to give them. All remaining cuts of vegetables and fruits go to my garden as manure. However the apartments near my home throw away wine bottles, sacks, plastics etc. Can MCC help me in screwing them for their faults? I pay cess for garbage collection like others. So that I can console myself that the cess I paid is properly utilized . MCC has not given me the buckets for garbage collection . I have not demanded it from corporation or corporator.
