Hosapete, Nov 1: The tower of the historically important Lord Kalleshwara temple, which is known for beautiful artefacts dating back to the Chalukya period, stands demolished. Apparently, this destruction was caused by some treasure hunters. The temple stands by the side of Mylara-Toranagal state highway in Hoovina Hadagali taluk of Vijayanagara district.
The temple was recently taken over by the archaeological department. Those who feel that treasures are hidden inside the temples, perhaps believed that there is some treasure in the form of gold coins or gems. They demolished the tower of the temple, searching for the treasure, on Saturday night. The beautifully sculpted idols of the gods and the presiding deity were untouched by them. But the important and beautiful lotus-shaped carvings in the tower were demolished by them as they believed that treasure might have been hidden under this sculpture. This has deprived the temple of its most important and unique attraction.
