Hassan: Shiradi Ghat turns into danger zone - Driver’s slight error can cause death

Daijiworld Media Network – Hassan (MS)

Hassan, Nov 3: Travelling on Shiradi Ghat road has become a nightmare. During the rainy season the road literally turns into a valley of death. In the 26 km long stretch of the road many areas are marked only for one way traffic. Even if the driver makes a slight error, grave danger is imminent.

In many areas of the ghat landslides occur during the rainy season. Many times, the ghat is closed by the administration. There is no permanent solution in sight as of now. Though a concrete road was constructed till Gunday, due to heavy rain, it also got damaged.

Every year the road is being repaired. The contractors who are doing the job are getting richer. The plight of vehicle drivers has not improved at all since many years. In many places where there was a landslide during the last rainy season, only sand bags are kept and 'go slow' boards are placed.

The commuters on this ghat feel that only if the tunnel is made on this ghat, traversing would be safe. The movement of heavy vehicles is causing danger to the other vehicles also as most of the ghat is one way traffic. The administration has to wake up immediately and do the needful to save the lives of people and also prevent delay in transportation of goods from capital to Mangaluru and vice versa.

We see temporary solutions to permanent problems. That how state/federal government works in our country. Hence contractors, politicians become richer and common man become poorer day by day. Every Indians tax money goes in to their pockets and our people vote based on religion/unwanted issues and not on development. Our Country/Politicians will change when we select candidates on development and not on religion. If we all work towards this we will become No1.

Ghat turns a danger zone ?It was and is a danger zone. When Govt decides to make it safer ,has to put efforts and interest to do safer.Only have to control the work of contractor or before giving free for traffic ,control it how far it is ok or dangerous. They shouldnt lease the money before completion.Even after noting it is danger ,no efforts are undertaken to make it safe atleast for the time being. They should immediately put at the sides fence as a or ribbon to warn people at night.or stop the traffic so long it is given free when dry and or work done. One knows Ghats are downwards going ,.During rainy time mud will become slippery and moist.with trees routes it will be heavy ,and mud starts to roll on.Best close roads in rainy season.unnels are still more dangerous when work is not done properly.Suppose in a tunnel have to realize suppose one gets stuck due to any fire or water fills up if no out let at sides built up,whole line will be blocked and you are in a death track. No oxygen ,no way out ,or even mud might get in due to bad work.you are not sure.

It is foolish to point fingers at politicians only. These landslides are the results of many factors. Deforestation is causing loosening of soil strength, rising overpopulation which has increased heavy transportation , heavy trucking, on poorly constructed roads are the causes. Utter absence and enforcement of corrupt, incompetent forest officers, police and politics makes this difficult. Changing climate is another factor which is taking place all over the globe too! Building roads to highest standards of engineering is costly but must be done . It may run into hundreds of chores of rupees. Otherwise these disasters will recur over and over again. No matter how many mindless praying to dumb, mute and deaf gods and rituals one may perform, it is of no use. Only science and engineering have the answers. These problems have been handled elsewhere. Indians have the ability . What is holding up are corruption and no will to enforce commonsensical laws!

Building a tunnel is not straightforward. The soil conditions need to be suitable for building a tunnel. A tunnel can also have internal landslides. These landslides on the western ghats are a result of the rapid deforestation there. It rains when it is not supposed to rain. It hot when it is supposed to be cold.
