Mangaluru: Lack of willpower turns Nanthoor flyover into a mirage

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 4: Nanthoor circle happens to be one of the most dense and dangerous circles in the city. The overpass project at this circle which was proposed, continues to languish in files because of the lack of willpower among the officials and the people's representatives.

It has been several years since the proposal for the overpass here was sent to the union ministry for surface transport. In the evenings and mornings every day, huge traffic blockages happen here, and people get caught for hours together. This is also an accident zone. Therefore, the government had been approached with a request to provide relief from this situation. However there are no signs about this demand getting the light of the day.

The people who have been demanding for an overpass or flyover have witnessed that the proposal has been endorsed by the city corporation council's general session, quarterly Karnataka Development Programme meetings, and the meetings relating to highways in which people's representatives raise this demand. The people feel that none of these leaders have shown the grit to persistently follow the file till it is sanctioned.

When the highway work was undertaken between Surathkal and B C Road, there was a proposal to build an overbridge here. In 2007, the problem of land acquisition arose and the highways authority dropped the plan. The district administration later acquired the land but Ircon International Limited, which had bagged the contract, refused to execute the work as cost had steeply escalated.

The experts opine that the overbridge does not suit Nanthoor. As such, the overpass was felt to be suitable. For the overpass, a project report of Rs 40 crore was sent to the centre in 2013 but it is awaiting approval even now. As per the plan, vehicles moving on national highway from the direction of Udupi take an overpass from near Padua high school and reach near Sandesha foundation after which they move towards Kerala. Vehicles coming from Bikarnakatte move on the current road as usual.

If they don't have the guts to build flyover/underpass then atleast deploy 4 traffic policemen 24hrs on that circle. Atleast traffic will move and padistrians will also be safe.

Mangalore is going to be a smart city and cannot solve the problem Nanthoor junction. It creates problem in all 4 directions due to traffic jam. If cannot build a fly over make under passes. Any ways they have to find out proper solution at the earliest. Early people used to sit in Dear park to relax and have some fresh air. Now a days in that traffic jam one totally gets exhausted by the time one reaches the dear park.

Mangalore may grow exponentially interms of traffic, apartments, commercial buildings...But not as a planned smart city...i see MCC is struggling to build a small footpath. ..Roads are not planned and grid patterned...No waterfront development..Old city busses...in the era of hyperloop..BRTS..metro.monorails....should get rid of many old tiled roof houses in city in shabby condition...Then a smart city maybe

Nalin Kateel and VedavAss Kamath are still using pacifiers and wear diapers inside their chaddis — so where is the question of will power? They are only interested in being in power — don't expect anything to happen!!!

My opinion is it is better go to Delhi once by our experts planning engineers from Mangalore and study how the traffic in capital on India is running smoothly. In Connaught palace , Parliament street, Embassy area ,each places nearly 6 to 8 roads are joining the circle. But my request is go to Delhi to study the Traffic system and not for holiday trip, like before our MCC team went to Goa and other places to study the fish market. Place don't send corporators or planning officials and planning advisers.

Dear All.., I just want to highlight a point here in terms of building a good infra in Mangalore. Mangalore has exponentially grown in last 3 years. The traffic management requires a different approach, not like the one NHAI messed up with Pumpwell flyover in terms of Engineering & consultant design. With low height and lacking service road and underpass planning of such major junction. So here in Nanthoor too . Highway towards Kochi & towards Bangalore should be made on a with skewed , staggered or with different intersection design. By acquiring little extra space this should be planned. Because ease of leaving from traffic is more important for a future smart City.

The 77-km four-lane Mangaluru City bypass between Mulki and Thokkottu via Kinnigoli, Kateel, Bajpe, Kaikamba, B.C. Road, Melkar and Mudipu which was announced some years ago should be implemented as soon as possible. This is the only alternative. The proposed underpass/flyover etc. will only add to chaos because the people in this forum whomtalk about it do not know the actual reality. This road is also the junction for the bengaluru to panambur and the NH66 Edapally - Panvel road and also a exisitng busy city intersection. Even if all the land is acquired here there will be no smooth flow of traffic at all. Check any highway that passes through cities and you will see. When all small towns in karnataka have bypass roads our people here are only talking about cut and paste solutions and not encouraging long term solutions like bypasses.

Our MP and BJP is talking and boasting about development. The need of the hour is a flyover or whatever may be should be at Nanthoor and KPT. Was there any need of a flyover at Kaikamba and Kuntikan. These were made to make money. Its high time the elected leaders and officials wake up.

Vehicles and traffic will worsen in years to come. Its wise to act upon now and push the project to reality . The more the delay more the damage. I am quite sure that a day will come when authorities have to get up from deep sleep though they want to extend their sleep further as it will be inevitable to build a flyover and I am sure the traffic chaos will go upto 3 to 4 kms on all the quadrants. Act now and make our future traffic free or sleep now and lead a one way to traffic disaster in years to come
