Puttur, Dec 15: The Uppinangady police had taken into custody three leaders of the Popular Front of India (PFI) for questioning in connection with certain cases. PFI activists held a protest in front of the police station on Tuesday December 14, demanding the release of their leaders.
The activists continued to hold protest from morning to night. Later, the police let one of the leaders go. However, the activists pressured the police to release the other two. The organizers also decided to offer namaz in front of the police station at night. However, the police prevented them from doing so.
At around 9 pm on Tuesday, the police resorted to caning to disperse the protestors. Atoor Tangal, who led the protestors also got hit. Tension mounted in the area. As such, the department enforced section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code to control the situation.
