Puttur, Dec 16: Westran range inspector general of police (IGP), Devajyoti Ray, district superintendent of police (SP), Rishikesh Sonawane, along with additional SP, Shivakumar Gunare, visited Uppinangady on Wednesday December 15, and reviewed the situation.
Speaking to media persons, the SP said that the investigation into the saber attack is going on at a brisk pace. He said that the actual accused in the case will be identified and legal steps will be taken.
He said that three activists of the Popular Front of India had been summoned to the police station for questioning. "A crowd which staged a protest opposite the police station at Uppinangady tried to force its way into the police station and behaved violently. The police had to cane the crowd and the police were also attacked. Three cases in this connection have been registered and the task of identifying the culprits is in progress," he explained.
He requested the people not to fall prey to rumours. "The people have to repose trust in the police department. If they have any confusion or doubt, they can directly contact the concerned. No one should nurture the notion that they can force the department to bend through coercion. We have been taking all precautions to ensure that no innocents are booked," he stated.
Because of the prevailing tension in Uppinangady due to violence, additional police patrolling has been arranged. Reserve police forces from three states have been deployed in certain strategic locations, he stated.
