Puttur, Dec 16: Police arrested 10 people on Thursday December 16 in connection with the incident where hundreds of Popular Front of India (PFI) activists went on a rampage outside Uppinangady police station demanding the release of persons arrested in connection with an assault case.
The arrested are identified as Mohammed Tahir, Swadik, Abdul Mubarak, Abdul Sharin, Mohammed Zahir, Zujir Mohammed Faizal, Mohammed Haneef, N Kaseem, Mohammed Asif and Tufail Mohammed. The police have booked the accused under sections 143, 147, 151, 341, 354, 332, 353, 427, 307, 269, 270 and 149 of IPC and section 2(a) of KPDL act.
It may be recalled, on December 14, police restored to lathi-charge after the protest by PFI activists turned violent in front of Uppinangady police station.
As per complainant, Uppinangady police sub-inspector had detained, PFI and SDPI leaders Zachariah and Musthafa for an inquiry in connection to a case. Nearly, 200 to 300 activists of the above-said organization gathered illegally in front of the police station demanding to release their leaders and the protesters also raised slogans against the police. They also created inconvenience to the traffic movement on the road. The protesters also did not follow the Covid-19 guidelines. Police inspector Kumar Kamble also asked the protestors not to hold protests by announcing on a loudspeaker of the police jeep. He also said that after the inquiry, the detained individuals will be released if they had no role in the crime.
As the protesters were trying to enter the police station, the assistant commissioner of Puttur also imposed prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 section. Even this was announced through on the loudspeaker. Though Puttur DySP Dr Gana P Kumar asked the protesters to leave the spot, they continued their protest. The protestors, continuing the protest, tried to enter the police station. When the complainant and other police staff tried to stop them, they pelted stones at the police station resulting damage to the window panes and to the police jeep. The protesters assaulted the complainant and a women constable and attempted to sexually assault the complainant. They also tore the uniform of the officer and attempted to murder her. They also prevented other police staff from discharging their duties.
The complainant and the woman constable is receiving treatment in Puttur government hospital as in-patients.
In connection, to the case, sub inspector Prasanna Kumar also filed a complaint against the protestors. The accused are booked under sections 143,147,148,332 504, 427 353 307 and 149 of IPC and section 2(a) of KPDL act.
